About this deal

Its focus is on playing along with melodic fill, bass, chord, and drum auto-accompaniment. The Q-Chord sections control effects, Q-card, Strumplate voices, rhythm, and EZ play. Barring drums, every other accompaniment section may be individually turned off. Both of these new instruments also featured a greatly improved strumplate that was said to increase dynamic response and range considerably. It must have worked, as the design of the strumplate remained largely unchanged for the rest of the Omnichord's manufacturing run. Interestingly, the OM-84 featured a dual response strum-plate, so two separate sustain settings were possible. The Omnichord, or OM-27 as it was known at the time, also featured those same 27 chord buttons and playable strum pad but added a preset rhythm section similar to what you'd find on a Casio keyboard. Users could select a preset rhythm pattern, volume, and tempo. There was only one sound built-in to the OM-27, which Suzuki simply called "harp". Some of the main reasons why the Q Chord is so successful:It's Easy To Play:From "zero" to "musician" in 9 seconds flat! I still love the strum plate and the ability to audition 7 chord types at the push of a button. 84 chords... makes life so much easier.

The QChord is part of the Omnichord series by Suzuki and was first released in 2000. Suzuki combined the technology of a basic keyboard along with an electric guitar for an instrument that is not only easy to play, but also very portable. *** In terms of design the QChord is divided into three separate sections. These consist of a “strum plate” that is touch sensitive along with a rhythm section and a section from the chord buttons. Players have the option to either use a combination of these sections or use them independently. This instrument also has a 2-digit LCD, 2-LED Light bar, and 12 LEDS. Not everyone wants to be a world class musician, but many people would like to play an instrument well enough to enjoy what they are playing and hope that others are enjoying what they are listening to! The Q Chord does both! VOICES - QChord has 100 General MIDI voices on board to choose from. You can assign these voices to melody keyboard or strumplate. (see a List of Voices.)

Q-Chord Features

The Q Chord is an ideal accompaniment instrument, which therefore makes it popular with a wide variety of different outlets and groups, such as churches, Primary schools, Pre-schools/Kindergarten, Scouts, Girl Guides, caravan and camping etc. The very soothing melodic sounds of the Q Chord make it ideal for use in therapy groups and therapeutic applications. Many organisations are now using it for this. One notable example is the American musician and producer Jim James, who has used the Omnichord extensively in his solo work and collaborations. James has praised the Omnichord for its otherworldly sound and its ability to create a sense of timelessness and transcendence in his music.

You can trigger chord tones using the Strumplate via one among ten different sounds on the front panel: Sound FX, Synth, Harp, Flute, Voice, Organ, Vibes, Strings, Piano, and Guitar.EFFECTS - Customize the sound of your music by adding vibrato, reverb and fills. You can even adjust drums, bass, accompaniment and melody. And if these aren’t quite up to snuff for your purposes, you can use other GM sounds with the MIDI Program Changes. You’ll also be able to control sustain and relative volume. The Sections What can I use that'll most efficiently filter out all the useless midi data so that the chord buttons and strum plate can be used to play VSTi in my DAW? I use Usine so modularly routing midi data isn't a problem. As noted previously, most Q Chord sections can be turned off, but not drums-so MIDI data is constantly output on channel 10. Strangely, the Q Chord regularly sends MSB, LSB, and Pitch Bend value 64 (the middle, "neutral" position on a pitch wheel) messages on all accompaniment channels, even those that are supposed to be turned off. Presumably this data is intended to reset synth voices on all channels, but when a part is off, it ought to send no data. The Q Chord (new generation Omnichord) is both unique and innovative, taking creative enjoyment to a level unattainable on more conventional instruments. Essentially a mass-market product, anyone can play the instrument, the first time they try... whatever their level of playing skill!

Oddly, I couldn't figure out how to simply eliminate midi channels 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10 and keep 3, 14, 15 & 16 and I think I figured out how to filter out just the pitch bend from all channels, but I want to discover which channel the actual physical pitch bend wheel is being sent on, so I can keep that. The design and features of the QChord makes it an instrument that can be enjoyed by anyone from a novice to an accomplished musician. In fact, the “strum plate” has been designed in such a way that it is easy to avoid any wrong notes. The QChord also always sounds in tune and strumming the “strings” of the instrument is as easy as pressing a chord button and then using the “strum plate.” The QChord is capable of soothing melodic sounds and works best as an accompaniment instrument. Regardless of what instrument we’re talking about, the way it handles in practice matters a lot. And while this is a pretty fun experimental instrument, there’s no getting around one simple fact – regardless of how you hold it, playing won’t be anything near comfortable. Shortly thereafter, in 1989, the OM-250 came out, which introduced yet another important update—a MIDI out port so that the Omnichord's useful chord mode could be used for external gear. This was a huge bonus, as it allowed the Omnichord to interface with other electronic gear. Electronic producers slowly started gravitating towards using it in the studio for its unique take on composing. With some effort, you can sequence Strumplate parts, even in odd meters. To sequence the Strumplate on its own, I had to turn down the drum part (turning down the Rhythm volume on the Q Chord sends CC 7 messages to the GM module) so I didn't have to listen to it. But I was still forced to remove the superfluous drum, Pitch Bend, and other data recorded to the sequencer. You can set your accompaniment up using six buttons in chord mode. Auto Chord gives you basic comping, the chord is sustained by Chord Hold, and Chord Plus will add any other auto-accompaniment parts. While you're unlikely to stumble upon one at your local music store, Suzuki's Omnichord has played a unique and innovative electronic musical instrument that has played an important role in the history of electronic music.
