Wild Turkey Longbranch Kentucky Straight Bourbon is a rare, small-batch Kentucky Straight bourbon refined with Texas Mesquite and oak charcoals. United by a shared curiosity and love of great whiskey, Eddie and Matthew wondered what would happen if a Kentucky Bourbon took a road trip to Texas. There’s some astringency as the main flavor marker at the midpalate, but overall this remains watery and weak.

The Longbranch would be a good starting point for those new to bourbon with the low-ish abv making it very approachable. Either way, this is a tasty slightly-sweet bourbon with just barely enough tongue burn to feel legitimate.

An eight year old Kentucky Straight Bourbon made in small batches and refined with Texas Mesquite and American Oak charcoals. Longbranch from Wild Turkey has been refined using charcoal from Kentucky White Oak and Texan Mesquite as a nod to both home states. McConaughey and the Russells say they were going for a sweeter, mellower, easier-drinking style of sipping whiskey but with a hint of Texas smoke. Having not tasted the original, unaltered bottle of Longbranch, it’s hard for me to say whether the experiment was a success. Imagine a celebrity endorsed whiskey that is aged eight years and touched by another wood like mesquite? So, we are putting aside The Lincoln Lawyer and whether or not he actually worked hand-in-hand with Jimmy and Eddie Russell to select casks. Barbecue fans will be familiar with the flavor of mesquite smoked meats, which is definitely a departure from oak.
