About this deal

There seems to be a bit of a bias towards species from English-speaking countries as most entries in here will be present in one or more of USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or UK/Ireland. FIVE STARS* “After this book, nothing will seem the same again… beautifully written and illustrated. The new Book of Fungi, by Peter Roberts and Shelley Evans, is a couple of kilograms worth of beautiful mushroom book. However if you have an interest in the natural world and are just discovering the world of Fungi, the title of this review is apt. This pocket-sized compendium is a lively combination of clearly explained science, entertaining cultural references and potted biographies of leading personalities in the world of mycology.

The list is not exhaustive: with the incredible amount of literature out there, and the amazing work of so many people, I will be busy for the next ten years at least. It is both scientific with proper references and highly readable, Sheldrake’s style being entertaining as well as precise. They not only partner in symbiotic relationships with over ninety percent of the world's trees and flowering plant species, they also recycle and create humus, the fertile soil from which such flora receive their nutrition.Writing and broadcasting on wildlife and countryside topics for more than 30 years, Pat is the author of more than 20 books and hundreds of articles.

But how easily we forget that those fungi, and the web they embody are themselves alive and therefore subject to the same motivations that move us.But the complexity and scientific jargon of the subject made it difficult for newcomers to gain a broad view of this vast topic. Discover the fascinating stories behind some 300 species of fungi and understand the world of mushrooms like never before! Discover the fascinating stories behind 300 species of fungi and understand the world of mushrooms like never before! Sheldrake brilliantly weaves a narrative to reframe our understanding of the fabric of life, extending the boundaries of our identity in the process. It turns out an evil fungus has infiltrated the house, extending the life of the family and harming everyone else by slowly possessing them.

In the 1980s I was a maverick because as an organic market gardener, my work was mostly seen as irrelevant to society, producing food that was expensive and for only a few people. Fungi tend to grab our attention in autumn when they produce their spectacular fruiting bodies but, for most of their life-cycle, they are hidden from view, recycling nutrients in ecosystems and generally maintaining the health of the planet. Some fungi are parasites or saprotrophs; many are poisonous and, yes, hallucinogenic; others possess life-enhancing properties that can be tapped for pharmaceutical products; while a delicious few are prized by epicureans and gourmands worldwide.

Where possible, species are described and illustrated on the same page, with up-to-date authoritative text aiding identification. It is as good as (and in some ways better than) the 2015 revision that I’m reviewing here, though quite a few of the binomial names it uses are now out of date.
