About this deal

Detectives, Thulin and Hess, team up to try to solve the mystery and prevent another woman from falling victim to the vicious Chestnut Man. Laura’s boyfriend was a paedophile and recorded her son, Magnus, in an underground cellar hidden in the garage. Anne’s husband physically abused their daughters. Probably, both mothers knew about the children’s abuse yet neglected it. Women are disappearing. When their battered and mutilated bodies are discovered, a chestnut man, a type of handmade doll, is always located at the grisly crime scenes. I don't know if I've ever admitted this before but I am a fan of Scandinavian crime books and Stieg Larsson is probably to blame. And The Chestnut Man vibes with Larsson's books perfectly. Of course I had to like this. amirite? The killer as well. Genz was named Toke Bering as a young boy. He and his young sister, Astrid, were orphaned and originally sent to live in the Petersen household along with their own daughter, Rosa Hartung. Rose lied about Toke sexually molesting her. That resulted in Toke and Astrid being sent to a different foster home, one where they were sexually abused constantly. Toke snapped and murdered his new foster parents, along with the police officer who first arrives on the scene.

I kept picturing, Linden and Holder, instead of feeling like I was getting to know two different characters. Crime fiction of the highest quality - fascinating characters, great storytelling, and unbearable suspense. I absolutely loved it Deon Meyer Both detectives have dark pasts although we don't get to know the entire story about either one of them. I'm hoping that there is another book about these two down the line because I want to know more about them. The work they do is very methodical and even tedious, such a mix of horror and brutality, intertersperced with countless red herrings within the story, via the killer, but also from the author. Just when you think you have a handle on things, everything goes lopsided. There is a sense of the need for things to be solved now, before more women are killed, mixed in with a sense of the tedium of such a job. The Chestnut Man': The Latest Danish Netflix Obsession Is Like Watching a Bestselling Mystery Novel". indiewire.com. 1 October 2021 . Retrieved 11 October 2021.The action surges along in swinging the spotlight of suspicion around without ever letting the reader feel confident they have the right culprit, and the denouement is intense and very gory Strong Words A similar pattern was observed with a single mother Jessie Kivum so they decide to lay a trap for the chestnut man. He outsmarts them and Jessie is found dead near a cottage.

I was sooooo ready to give five Danish, thrilling, chilling, darkest, mind numbing stars to this book as a die-hard fan of Danish series “Forbrydelsen” (American version is “Killing” but in my opinion Danish version beats the hell of US version because of the atmosphere, sensational, smart, darker crime thriller elements and far better casting performances: I always prefer Sarah Lund over Sarah Linden!) The two are paired up when the murder of a young woman has links to the disappearance of a young girl a year earlier. When the cases are linked to other grisly murders, it’s clear there is a serial murderer on the loose in Copenhagen. The one defining characteristic, other than details of the actual killings, is the murderer leaves a calling card of a handmade chestnut doll at the scene. Chestnut dolls are apparently a thing in Denmark, and there is even a song: “Chestnut man, Chestnut man please come in…” To save innocent lives, a pair of detectives must put aside their differences to piece together the Chestnut Man’s gruesome clues. Detective Naia Thulin works in the Homicide department in Copenhagen, Denmark which is run by Detective Nylander. She is a single mother to daughter Le and is finding the department a little boring and so requests a transfer to NC3, National Cyber Crime department. The second concrete evidence came to light when Hess discovered that Linus was present at the crime scene when he told the police that he was driving up north with Kristine’s body. Thulin revealed that Linus didn’t confess until Tim Jansen confronted him with the machete. During the interrogation, Linus explained that he was a diagnosed schizophrenic and altered reality and facts due to his condition. Probably, in a hurry to close the case, Jansen influenced Linus to confess to killing Kristine. However, for some reason, Linus Bekker knew about the chestnut man and felt honored to be part of his crimes. Netflix

Kudos, Mr. Sveistrup, for making the transition from television to book writing. I can only hope others will find this book as stunning and create a buzz.Toke and Astrid Bering were first assigned to foster family, Petersen at Odsherred. Their sister Rosa Hartung lied about Toke sexually assaulting her which led the twins to be sent to the chestnut farm. Hess looks through old archive footage from Kristine Hartung's murder scene, where he discovers another chestnut man. Rosa Hartung changes her stance on Steen and decides to support him. Thulin and Hess question Linus Bekker again after footage from the murder scene shows him being present when he claimed he was dumping Kristine's body. Fractures start to show in Bekker's alibi, and he reveals he knows who the killer is but refuses to tell them. Nylander allows them to question Rosa Hartung, and they ask to look into old relocation cases of children she dealt with during her tenure. Too late, they discover that Hartung's driver, Jacob Rasouli, and his girlfriend, Benedikte Skans, have kidnapped Gustav Hartung. Both of them had been relocated to foster homes and acted in revenge against Hartung. Their van is eventually found, but both are already dead, while Gustav is alive. Hess suspects that Skans didn't kill herself and Rasouli in a murder-suicide. Thulin discovers severed body parts in a fridge belonging to Rasouli and Skans, whereupon Nylander closes the case.

Thulin and Hess were both believable and compelling. I would love to read further mysteries with them at the helm. Soon afterwards, another woman is found murdered, along with another chestnut man. Thulin and Hess suspect that there’s a connection between the Hartung case, the murdered women and a killer who is spreading fear throughout the country. But what is it? Fans of the hit show, The Killing, will find some common elements in the Chestnut Man, the debut from Danish screenwriter Soren Sveistrup. As a fan of the TV show, I appreciated the similarities, from the gloomy atmosphere to the flawed detective duo of Hess and Thulin. There aren't many things that can make my skin crawl, but this one had them all. So of course I got disgusted and revolted. So of course I had to give it 5 stars. I still can't bleach the information I read there away from my brain. But hey, still. 5 stars go to this.T he Chestnut Man has success written all over it. You will never want to play with conkers again Daily Express On 19 August 2019, Netflix announced its second Danish series at the Copenhagen TV Festival. The Chestnut Man is based on the debut novel by award-winning writer Søren Sveistrup ( The Killing) and the series debuted on Netflix worldwide. [8] Reception [ edit ]
