About this deal

Several varieties derived from H. paniculata grow to be small trees, while a few others stemming from species like H. quercifolia make great bushes and hedges. H. paniculata Haworth – Booth pre 1970) Best grown as blue, this is a lovely dwarf shrub with a long flowering period. Rather uneven lacecap flowers with serrated edges to the florets and foliage which changes to reddish purple in autumn. Needs a sheltered spot to avoid spring frosts. 1.25m (4ft 1in). Droopy leaves are quite a common problem with hydrangeas and the cause may be rooted in any one of multiple reasons. Hydrangea arborescens or smooth-leaf hydrangeas have extremely large, round flower heads. The heads can reach 10-12 inches across. They are not quite as hardy as other varieties and so will need a sheltered spot and possibly some protection from harsh winters.

Use a conventional balanced fertiliser or alternatively, simply apply organic compost or (a lighter application of) organic manure. If you are looking for year round interest then an evergreen climbing Hydrangea such as Hydrangea seemanii makes a great choice, although it is not as hardy as its deciduous cousin and will require some winter protection. Add a layer of mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Do not let the mulch touch the base of the plant to reduce the risk of rotting. The key reason for this is that some types of hydrangea flower on stems producedthe previous seasons whereas some hydrangeas flower on stems produced in thecurrent season. A discussion of how to fertilize hydrangeas wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the addition of small amounts of sulfur or lime when fertilizing to change hydrangea color. Hydrangeas treated with sulfur will remain or turn blue. Lime results in pink and a change to either color takes time. Please note: white hydrangeas will not change color. Position your hydrangea so that it avoids the midday sun on its roots. Some gardeners place hydrangeas on the sunless side of a low garden wall to keep the roots cool. Generally light shade is best for most, or afternoon and evening sun. If a hydrangea runs short of water it will let you know by wilting. However, don’t let it get to this stage because each time they wilt, they loose some oftheir vigour. Garden hydrangeas should not be confused with climbing hydrangeas which are, you guessed it, climbers.

I have four potted hydrangea macrophyllas and during cold frosty spells, I relocate them to a sheltered spot.

Why are my hydrangeas changing colour after I fertilise them?

A very old Japanese variety, often seen in their old paintings. Flowers in June, white flowers with few ray florets which age to pink. Upright growth to about 1 metre (3ft), with reddish foliage and stems later in the season. 1.5 m (5 ft). How to use: Apply one handful (35g) of Vitax Hydrangea Food around the base of the plant whilst planting. Through spring apply as a top dressing and lightly dig in or rake over the soil. In dry weather, make sure you water the ground beforehand for the best results. Based on my many years of growing hydrangeas and testing different feeds, I feel that the best fertiliser for hydrangeas is one that’s balanced or has higher potassium. These are the types that have pink or blue blooms depending on the pH level of the soil. There are two types, Hortensia, which have the big rounded balls of flowers, and Lacecaps which are more delicate. The rule of thumb is to fertilize hydrangeas once every month starting in March. This, of course, depends on when your region has spring and summer. If you live in a warmer climate, for example, your spring may only be a short season. Similarly, if you live in a cooler climate, you won’t have much of a summer so it’s best to consider feeding your hydrangeas once a month from March until July. Stop fertilization from August.
