About this deal

Te Fiti stopped Te K* from eating Maui’s heart by returning it to her own body. Te Fiti, as a result, brought life to the rest of the world.

Te Fiti is first seen in traditional animation during Gramma Tala's opening story. She tells the surrounding children about the day in which Maui stole Te Fiti's heart, and warns that it must be restored before humanity faces a slow and painful death at the hands of the lava demon Te Kā. Shortly afterward, the Ocean selects Tala's granddaughter, Moana, as the heroine capable of saving the world. While somewhat far-fetched, this theory about Disney’s favorite born navigator is certainly intriguing and, actually, could hold water… When directors Ron Clements and John Musker pitched their idea to then-Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter for a Polynesian mythology-inspired animated film, the latter advised for the men to go on research trips. Over the five years it took to develop and produce the movie, Clements and Musker travelled to Fiji, Tahiti and Samoa, and recruited experts from across the South Pacific to the Oceanic Story Trust to consult on the film’s cultural accuracy and representation. Anthropologists, historians, cultural practitioners, linguists, tattoo artists, elders, fishermen, and others were assembled to advise on the film’s most minute details. Tafitis Savannah Party is a production of Loewe Verlag and of the Good Evil - cultural and creative pilot of the Federal Government 2013/2014I particularly like that the heroine had no romantic link to a man,” Kauka notes. “I like that she was strong and committed to the cause of saving her community.” She points out the kapa (Samoan siapo—traditional bark cloth) costumes and how the credits scroll over a piece of kapa. Ever since Captain Cook landed in the Hawaiian Islands and realized that the inhabitants spoke a cognate language to those of the South Pacific islands, scholars and others have researched and theorized about the origins and migrations of the Polynesians.

The real-life history and heritage of Polynesian islands such as Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, and Polynesia can be found in Moana. Polynesian ancestors can be found all over Maui, from the homes to the tattoos on the island. The Moana sails on a single-hulled outrigger canoe rather than a large vessel like the Taj Mahal. The movie depicts how Moana’s father advises her to sail past the reef. Historians do not know why Polynesians abandoned the open ocean around 3,500 years ago. The film contains a number of familiar Polynesian stories. Moana is a story about a young girl discovering her ancestors’ stories and accepting her heritage as an explorer. This film not only tells the story of Moana’s heritage, but it also shows how it all shapes her as a person. You can learn more about your Polynesian heritage by reading the following articles and activities. Te Fiti, as well as her Te Kā aspect, is an enormous embodiment of the earth, but her appearance differs between the two forms.

As Maui made a hasty escape on his boat, a vengeful Te Kā rose from her slumber and confronted him. Their battle resulted in the loss of the heart, and as punishment for his crimes, Te Kā banished Maui to a desolate spit of land in the middle of the open ocean, where he would be doomed to remain stranded for eternity. Meanwhile, with Te Fiti now a dark entity, a devastating curse would slowly begin to spread across the world, destroying flora and fauna, making it impossible for humanity to survive. According to legend, only the restoration of Te Fiti's heart could end the blight. Massive in size, Te Kā towers above all who encounter her, and is usually depicted with a hollow scowl and an expressionless, skull-like face. She is comprised completely out of lava, with molten skin and flames as her hair. Always surrounding her slender form is a dense pyrocumulus cloud, coupled with bolts of lightning and volcanic ash. She has no legs, her lower half made of a shapeless mass of lava, and she moves about by crawling with her hands. On her chest is a spiral carving of where her heart once was; should it be reattached, Te Kā will return to her true form. The Hōkūleʻa voyaging canoe has proved the efficacy of traditional Oceanic navigation since 1976, when it embarked on its historic maiden voyage to recover the lost heritage of this ocean-sailing tradition. The general scholarship on migrations seems well established, and most current researches now seek to understand the timing of the various colonizations. The power and glory of this goddess is beautifully presented in the poem “ I am Hine, I am Moana” by Tina Ngata, a New Zealand Māori educator.
