Your wallpaper arrives and it's time to take wallpaper to wall, but the label has got a series of symbols that look like they belong in greek mythology?! Don't panic, our complete guide to wallpaper symbols will help you get to know your wallpaper in no time so you can enjoy your decorating project! Scrubbable– This wallpaper is one of the tougher paper types and is indicated by a symbol which resembles a scrubbing brush. This simply means that you can apply a little more pressure to remove dirt without the paper becoming damaged. We recommend also using a damp sponge and still taking appropriate care and precaution as ultimately, it’s important to remember that you are still dealing with paper. Divide this total amount of metres by the number of metres on a roll to determine the number of rolls needed. Step 6: Remove excess paste from paper. Straight across match: A wallpaper with a straight across match is a one that starts over at the ceiling line. This means that the design has to match the strips on either side. If you are using a heavy grade wallpaper a stronger adhesive may be required. It is advisable to follow the manufacturer’s instructions on which paste is recommended. Any solvent free, fungicide protected, ready-mixed adhesive will do the job. How much paste will I need? Extra-washable wallpaper is more resilient to cleaning and mo isture. You can clean extra- washbale wallpaper using a wet cloth and soapy water and you should be able to remove most water-based stains if it is cleaned carefully , any greasy / oil-based stains should be cleaned immediately for best results.An offset match design is identified with two arrows pointing towards each other but at offset levels. This is seen as the most difficult to hang however once you get your head around it it's definitely not something to avoid/shy away from! The design on an offset match wallpaper happens diagonally rather than straight across. The edge of the wallpaper only matches the edge of the second strip when it is dropped by a specific distance. This is usually specified on your label for example 64/32cm. 64cm identifies the pattern repeat and 32cm is the displacement. When hanging this type of wallpaper it's usually easiest to match and cut your strips on the floor/paste table before pasting and hanging. Ready mixed paste is available in 2.5kg containers which will cover approximately 25 meters of wallpaper, 5kg containers which covers approx 5 rolls or a 10kg tub which covers approx 10 rolls. How do I hang conventional or ‘regular’ wallpaper? Spongeable – If you see a single wavy line on your label then it means that your wallpaper is spongeable. This is the lowest washability rating and means that, to clean the wallpaper, you have to use a damp but not soaking wet sponge to very gently wipe the surface of the paper. You must not use any cleaning fluids or chemicals, just water. This is a design match type where each vertical strip applied on a wall is exactly matched with its adjacent stripe. The straight match is one of the most common design printing styles. In this design type, you will encounter the same design elements on the same level as you run horizontally along the wall. Damask wallpapers and Geometric shape wallpapers are great examples of such wallpapers. Half drop match For me personally, if I like a design its removal method doesn't stop me from selecting it however it is good to understand the symbols associated with removing the wallpaper for when you're going to come to replace it later down the line!

This is not a common type of wallpaper as it is already pasted. All it needs is to be dipped into a water tray to activate the paste before it can be hung onto the wall. Wallpaper Removal Symbols A very important aspect of hanging wallpaper is understanding your wallpaper’s pattern match. Pattern match is simply the horizontal alignment between two adjacent strips of wallpaper. If you don’t follow or understand your wallpaper’s pattern match then the wallpaper may be hung incorrectly resulting in disappointment and a waste of time and money. There are four main types of pattern match. This symbol means that your wallpaper can be lightly cleaned with a dry sponge Due to this being the lowest washability rating . the wallpaper should not be used in areas with high humidity because the moisture can easily damaged the paper . It is also not recommended that wallpaper with this symbol is use d in areas with high traffic either due to the limited washability . Washable It’s important to remember that although it is scrubbable , it is still paper and aggressive abrasives, significant pressure or strong cleaning chemicals are still liable to damage the paper. Extra-Scrubbable This type of paper is the traditional way to hang wallpaper, however, requires a few more steps to hang the wallpaper than other types of wallpaper adhesive techniques. Use a good quality matt emulsion paint and let it dry before applying other finishes, i.e. silk emulsion or satin/gloss oil paints. If you have too much water in your sponge or cloth then you can cause tears in the wallpaper. This wallpaper requires each strip to match in horizontal lines across adjacent strips. The design will be the same from left to right on one strip. Paste the Wall– Paste the wall is a more recent addition to the wallpaper world. With much easier application, no need for soak times and less risk of errors, this is an increasingly popular wallpaper type. Paste the wall is exactly what it sounds like; you apply the paste directly to the wall then fix the paper on top. Paste the wall wallpaper will often be found with non-woven wallpapers. The main types are free match, straight match and offset match. What is free match? Wet Removable – Wet removable wallpaper can only be removed from the wall with a liquid solution such as using a stripping agent or soaking the paper with water. It is important to hang the first strip of wallpaper vertically. To do this mark a vertical line with a plumb bob (a weighted length of string) or spirit level, and draw a pencil line. There is no need to use a special paste to hang 'Paste the Wall' wallpaper. However, a colour change paste which is coloured when applied to the wall so you can see where you have pasted but dry's clear may make the job even easier,. Should lining paper be hung horizontally or vertically when used with a paste the wall wallpaper? Washable– Washable wallpaper is slightly more durable in this regard than a spongeable design. It is indicated by a double wavy line. Whilst it is easier to wipe away surface dirt it also requires you to be very delicate and use a sponge with no chemicals. Using a sponge that is too wet or applying too much pressure may cause the paper to rip and tear. Paste-the-paper wallpapers are one of the most common-and most traditional- ways of hanging wallpapers. This is a more durable type of wallpaper. Scrubbable wallpaper can be scrubbed clean using a sponge or a cloth from a variety of different stains with a little more pressure than washable. A free match is the easiest to hang. It basically means there is no matching required. So, no matter how the strips of wallpaper are hung, no visible join or seams need to be worried about.
