About this deal

While the Powdered Sugar doughnut is lighter than it appears, it really is quite sweet, and like the cinnamon option, quite dry. If you can look past the slight mess, it’s a classic flavor that adds a little something extra to the classic cake doughnut. Despite popular belief, the French Cruller tastes quite different than the Glazed doughnut. In fact, its fluffiness makes this doughnut taste fried, the way a doughnut should be. Some testers thought it was almost too hollow, though. The airiness gives it a bit of a dry consistency that the French may not approve of. Baked Donuts: Instead of frying donuts, you can make these baked cinnamon sugar donuts, but skip dipping them in butter and the cinnamon-sugar topping. You’ll have a little extra frosting if using the baked donuts recipe (which makes 8), but if you double the baked donut recipe (to make 16) you will have enough frosting for each. Cake flour: a lower-protein, finely-milled flour. If you don’t have cake flour on hand, you can make your own cake flour at home (see my notes below). Cake doughnuts originated in the United States in 1829, and the typical ingredients in old-fashioned cake donuts include flour, sugar, eggs, sour cream (or buttermilk), and a leavener (like baking powder, in this case). Cake doughnuts first appeared in American cookbooks in the 1830s, around the same time that baking soda and baking powder first became commercially available.

As I mentioned above, this process for making old-fashioned donuts from scratch is not difficult at all, but you need to bring your patience…because there’s plenty of downtime while you chill the dough and wait for the donuts to cool.

Confectioners’ Sugar: No need to sift it, but you can if you want to guarantee perfectly smooth icing. Carrot cake donuts are topped with cream cheese icing, and garnished with toasted shredded coconut.

Cool the Donuts. As you pull the donuts out of the oil, place them on a paper towel-lined tray (to drain any excess oil) and allow them to cool for about 15 minutes. The donut is topped with chocolate ganache for a rich chocolate and vanilla donut. Chocolate Donuts

The best donut flavors in the world range from simple staples like glazed and maple to new donut favorites like red velvet and key lime. Doughnut chains like Krispy Kreme and Dunkin' Donuts have been dreaming up new stoner delights for years (who else could come up with the concept of putting cheesecake on a donut?), and this list of top doughnut flavors is but a peek at the amazing food abominations coming out of the minds of the calorie-unconscious everywhere. The creatively named spudnut is a cross between a donut and a potato. Mashed potatoes or potato starch is added to a batter and then deep-fried in oil, which gives them that crispy texture on the outside while keeping it soft and light on the inside. Also called potato donuts, they were invented in America in the mid-1900s. To reheat a donut, warm in the microwave for just 8-10 seconds. Don’t let it get too hot, or the glaze will melt right off. How to Freeze Donuts filled with fruit preserves are as common as ring-shaped varieties while small spheres of fried dough are referred to as drop donuts or donut holes. Donuts are commonly made with flour dough though they can be made with other types of batter as well.
