About this deal

There is a speaker onboard that's primary purpose is to handle calls and it wasn't long before voice messages were getting sent. Call quality was clear though isn't going to rival the clarity you'd get on a smartphone. Technology is a big part of our lives, and it can be a valuable tool for parenting in the modern world. Of course, a smartwatch isn’t a necessity, but there are some very good reasons for investing. To support children starting out in the online world, EE has also created PhoneSmart, a free online programme which helps young people learn how to how to stay safe and be kind online. It’s available to everyone, not just EE customers, via EEPhoneSmart.co.uk . This is not the first time technology experts hail Xplora’s smartwatches as one of the absolute best wearables for kids in the market: Whether you have a teenager or a slightly older child, the Apple Watch SE is a really great starting point. And what used to be a bit of a risky choice was largely mitigated by the release of Family Setup in 2020.

There’s no GPS and it hasn’t got a touchscreen, but if you’re looking to get your child up and active with a fun smartwatch, the Vivofit Jr 3 is a great option. All of these things are essential for paranoid parents looking for a way to keep tabs on younger kids who may be taking their first steps in walking to school on their own.All collaborations in the unique and award winning Goplay platform are specifically designed to keep kids motivated, engaged, and moving. Goplay is what really makes Xplora to stand out in the competition.

The XGO2 combines the fitness features of the Garmin and Fitbit watches above (with the Xplora Goplay Platform, your child can earn virtual coins with their steps) alongside the fun messaging and selfie elements of the Kurio. Improving on its predecessor the XGO, the XGO2 is waterproof and comes with a 700mAH battery. It has cellular connectivity and there is a slot for a SIM card, but you’ll have to buy your SIM separately. Your little ones can send messages via Bluetooth to other Kurio watches or via the Kurio Android app (not available on iOS) plus a front-facing camera lets them take selfies and videos, and add fun filters before sharing. The Xplora X5 Play includes a giffgaff SIM with unlimited calls and texts and 500MB of data, which you can set up with a monthly or pay-as-you-go contract. Paula Radcliffe, MBE and Xplora ambassador, said: “The Xplora X5 Play on EE uses technology to make activity fun and rewarding for kids, something I’m passionate about. The combination of connectivity and motivation to keep active is why I use Xplora smartwatches with my own kids. It’s great that together with EE, more parents can now benefit from this technology, along with a reliable connection, wherever family activities take you.”

I really like the hardware on the Xplora X5 Play, but the software side of the pair isn't complete. So what is all the fuss about? The Xplora X5 Play is a mobile phone in the shape of a smartwatch, with all the extra features you could think of!

Alistair Wilson, Director of Devices and Partnerships, EE, said: “Technology offers invaluable benefits for parents, and our research found that over a quarter believe it can help to support their children to be healthy and stay active. The launch of the X5 Play smartwatch on EE, with it’s own phone number, can give parents extra peace of mind with signal coverage in more places and a fast overall connection they can depend on, allowing them to stay in touch with their children as they find new activities they love.” EE today announced it has partnered with children’s smartwatch manufacturer, Xplora, to offer the X5 Play. The X5 Play is designed to motivate children to stay active and help parents stay connected to their children and is the perfect match for the UK’s number one network. The launch comes as a new survey reveals that nearly two thirds (59%) of UK parents feel their children have become less physically active since the start of the pandemic. Because the watch uses GPS, Wi-Fi, and cellular to determine its location, I found the results generally accurate. However, it would report the watch to be nowhere near its actual location from time to time. This is likely attributed to the X5 Play pinging location from the cell tower it was connected to rather than using the GPS. After a refresh, it would usually show the correct location.

Which smartwatch is better for kids?

There's also something called S-Zones. These are essentially areas you can create as safety zones or geo-fenced areas. When your child moves out of them, an alert will be sent to the phone the watch is paired to. On EE, parents who take out an X5 Play can be assured their children are connected to the UK’s best network, as named by RootMetrics’ independent network testing for the eighth year in a row. EE also took the top spot for network reliability, giving parents additional peace of mind with superfast connections and coverage they can rely on, in more places than any other operator.

Our testers were really excited to test the Apple Watch SE, but that's where the excitement ended. After testing the other watches that were designed just for kids, we all agreed that the Apple Watch SE doesn't have the features that appeal to younger kids, and that it was actually difficult for them to navigate it. If you have a tween or teenager who has an iPhone and is used to the quirks of an Apple device, the Apple Watch SE may be a good choice for them, but if they already have a phone, they likely don't really need a watch, too. From a young age, kids are introduced to screens and all the ways their little fingers can work to manipulate those screens. The result? Most parents are willing to admit their children can manage their smartphones and watches even better than they can. Our seven-year-old tester was instantly attracted to its vivid display that lets you swipe between its built-in features including a camera, speaker and microphone. There are 20 built-in apps including a host of games to keep kids occupied and our tester was particularly taken with the motion detection games such as Ninja Roll and Snake that encourages movement. If paired with another Kurio watch user kids can play games such as noughts and crosses, which seems like a nice interactive touch, as does its ability to send photos, emojis, doodles, texts and voice messages to other Kurio watches via Bluetooth. But, the heavy bumper’s advantage is that it safeguards the device from damage in the event that your child ever drops it or treats it roughly in any other way. It has an IP67 designation for water and dust resistance, so it ought to withstand the occasional tumble into home plate or swim in the neighborhood pool.
