About this deal

ASTM C 1329 on mortar cement is a sister product to C 91. The difference is that mortars made with mortar cements must have certain minimum bond strengths because these materials are intended for use in more structurally demanding applications. Cement types are the same as in C 91: N, S, and M. While it is not disallowed, there does not seem to be much demand in the marketplace for white mortar cement. Firstly, get a couple of samples of mortar. If the joints that you’re looking to repair are particularly damaged then you should be able to prise some chunks of old mortar out.

In this project guide we go through what’s involved with matching mortar colours, read on to find out how. Why Match Mortar Colours? Broom finish the concrete. Sweep the surface evenly, so that the powder covers the surface uniformly. Apply slightly more powder to areas that are too thinly covered. Let Powder Set

As we have established, the colour and tone of the sand that is used in your mortar mix has pretty much the greatest bearing on the overall colour of new mortar. Different types and colours of sand – Image courtesy of sandatlas.org Does the Colour of the Cement Matter? Another factor that can alter the colour of mortar is whether lime was used in the original mix. As lime is naturally light in colour and is often used in place of cement in some mixes, mortar created using lime can look very light in colour and in some cases be nearly white.

In some cases it is possible to take a sample of the original mortar, break it down and separate out the sand. With a sample of the original sand to hand you can then use it to compare against sand from different sources until you find an exact or very close match. Step 1 – Get Samples Please find some colour examples from the pictures below. More will be added soon. Colours may vary depending on many factors such as the brand of cement used, the colour of sand used, the ratio's of stone and sand used etc. Computer monitor settings and angle at which you view your monitor will also lighten or darken the colour shades. So please use this chart as a guide only. Concrete and All Other (General) Uses ASTM C 150 for portland cement is the most common cement spec in North America. Of the five basic types of cement covered under this spec, Types I through V, Types I and III white cement are the most prevalent, but Types II and V are also manufactured. Manufacturers usually control color of white cement by limiting the amount of iron and manganese oxides allowed. why is it used in decorative concrete. For a multi-colored pattern, use wooden cut-outs, and dip them in dry powder colors before "stamping" the pattern on wet concrete. Notes on Concrete Coloring With your solution prepared, pour in the course dust that you created earlier and stir it around to mix it up fully. Step 4 – Wait for Results Place the sand on an old sheet/cloth and leave it somewhere out of the way to fully dry off. Once dry, pop it into a clear sealed jar or container. Step 7 – Match the Sample

If mortar colour is not matched precisely, any type of repair to a wall is made immediately obvious and stands out like a sore thumb. Over time, weathering, lichen growth etc. will eventually dull the visually differences but this can take many, many years. With your sample to hand place them on an old scrap piece of wood. Using a similar scrap piece of wood, place this on top and use it to grind the mortar down. Firstly, start with a 3:1 mix (3 sand to 1 cement) and then a 3½:1 (3½ sand to 1 cement), then a 4:1 mix (4 sand to 1 cement), then a 4½:1 mix (4½ sand to 1 cement) and so on, all the way up to a 6:1 mix. ASTM C 595 on blended cement includes other pozzolanic or slag materials in the cement. There is no inherent reason why white cement could not be produced under C 595. However, byproduct ingredients like pozzolans or slags may not be color controlled to the same degree as portland cements, so a blended cement product is more likely to vary in color. Therefore, white cement would probably not be specified under this standard. NOTE: A bonding agent may cause the concrete color to be slightly lighter in shade than you originally planned for.
