About this deal

To her utter astonishment, the book became almost an overnight success and would have far-reaching and unexpected effects on the lives of people of Silverstream, including her own. Here’s this horrible little village, full of its own affairs and its own importance, all puffed up and smug and conventional and satisfied with itself, and then suddenly their eyes are opened and their shackles fall off and they act according to their real natures. Horsley Downs, whose hidden past as a chorus girl prior to her marriage is brought to light) to vast amusement (the doctor's wife, at least until . Meanwhile other more positive outcomes occur as a result of the book--the Colonel and his next door neighbour get married, and the vicar escapes the clutches of a gold digger who thinks he has more money than he does. Another of DE Stevenson’s books, Mrs Tim of the Regiment, was a BotW here last year and that also is a delightful selection of characters not doing a lot or facing much peril but being very funny while they do it.

It takes place around Wandlebury and Chevis Place (as does book 2 and 3), however Barbara makes only a cameo in the first chapter. Meek and dowdy Miss Buncle doesn't occur to anyone as a suspect, but how long can she keep her secret?By the third book, The Two Mrs Abbotts, it is the war and she has two children, and the focus of the book is less fully on her, but she continues throughout to be a delightful person to spend time watching. En conclusión nos hallamos ante una novela sumamente entretenida, fresca, amena, divertida y que me ha sentado de maravilla leer en verano. Those who are kind and decent get treated well, those who are venal, unkind and obnoxious get their comeuppance in her story.

She’s kind and often taken advantage of, but also wickedly observant and able to take her revenge (if she wants to) in her writing. But what really turns Miss Buncle's world around is this: what happens to the characters in her book starts happening to their real-life counterparts.

Miss Buncle's quiet little English village of Silverstream is therefor turned into the village of Cooperfield and the residents of Silverstream become thinly veiled characters in Miss Buncle's book, Disturber of the Peace. E. Stevenson' page as there is on my copy of Miss Buncle Married where Miss Buncle's Book is referenced).

He was not sure but "It made him chuckle, it kept him glued to his chair til the small hours, it drifted along and he drifted along with it and time was not. Schließlich hat sie eine Idee: Sie wird ein Buch schreiben, und zwar - da Phantasie nicht ihre Stärke ist - über etwas, das sie kennt.Unfortunately, the rear cover of the book is in rough condition (third photo) with significant rubbing. Dies ist ein Buch einer zu ihrer Zeit (erste Hälfte des vorigen Jahrhunderts) sehr erfolgreichen Schriftstellerin, die über lange Jahre nicht mehr gedruckt wurde und deren Bücher nur zu saftigen Sammlerpreisen antiquarisch zu bekommen waren. But it's not too sweet--there is enough sharply observant social satire to keep the reader wide awake and enough plot twists so that I was loathe to stop reading even in the midst of a glorious holiday weekend.
