About this deal

An SFP - Small Form-factor Pluggable Transceiver - is just a little device that converts a standard set of signals to another standard set of signals. They often convert to fibre Ethernet connections, but can equally provide copper Ethernet or even direct SFP-SFP connections. The Cisco SFP-10G-SR-I is a multirate 10GBASE-SR, 10GBASE-SW and OTU2/2e module for industrial operating temperature range. This module also supports CPRI datarate options 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 7a, 8. It supports a link length of 26m on standard Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI)-grade Multimode Fiber (MMF). Using 2000MHz *km MMF(OM3), up to 300m link lengths are possible. Using 4700MHz *km MMF (OM4), up to 400m link lengths are possible. The MAC is normally integated into the network device. The transciever may also be integrated or it may be in the form of a module. Integrating the transciever lowers the total per-port cost but reduces flexibility. The Cisco 10GBASE-LRM Module also supports link lengths of 300m on standard Single-Mode Fiber (SMF,G.652).

The Cisco SFP-10G-ZR is a multirate 10GBASE-ZR, 10GBASE-ZW, and OTU2/OTU2e module. It supports link lengths of up to about 80 kilometers on standard Single-Mode Fiber (SMF, G.652). This interface is not specified as part of the 10 Gigabit Ethernet standard and is instead built according to Cisco specifications. There are cases where data center ToR switches are 10G SFP+ fiber ports only, legacy equipment has 10GBASE-T RJ45 ports and cable architecture is copper. The requirement is to make a connection between the ToR switch fiber 10G SFP+ port with the equipment RJ45 SFP+ port. Three solutions: 1. Replace the ToR switch with one with 10G RJ45 ports. 2. Use an SFP+ to the RJ45 media converter. 3. Use a 10GBASE-T SFP+ transceiver. Solution 1 is costly and solution 2 is not that stable. The Cisco 10GBASE-ER Industrial Temperature Module supports a link length of up to 40 kilometers on standard Single-Mode Fiber (SMF, G.652). The SFP-10G-ER-I for Industrial Operating Temperature Range is a multirate 10GBASE-ER, 10GBASE-EW and OTU2/2e module. The GLC-GE-DR-LX SFP can interoperate with other 1G SFPs/interfaces as long as those are based on 1000BASE-LX/LH standard. No attenuator is needed in any fiber strand.

For data center network professionals, the power consumption of active devices is very important. After all, every watt consumed by a device means that two additional watts are needed to cool the data center. Take FS SFP+ copper solution as an example, its power consumption is 2.5W or less, and the longer the length, the lower the power consumption of the 10GBase-T modules. Assumes average 4:1 data reduction for PowerStore, 5:1 for Pure Storage. Actual results vary. The Cisco SFP-10G-LR-X is a multirate 10GBASE-LR, 10GBASE-LW, and OTU2/OTU2e module for extended operating temperature range. It supports a link length of 10 kilometers on standard Single-Mode Fiber (SMF,G.652). The 10G RJ45 SFP+ module is widely used in 10 Gigabit Ethernet, typically for data center interconnect (DCI) between a switch and NIC. We know that the fiber 10G SFP+ transceivers, and high-speed cables can also achieve 10GbE DCI connectivity. Given that 10G transmission over copper link has the cons of higher latency, more power consumption, and short reach limitations than optical link, some may ask: what's the purpose of the 10GBASE-T SFP+ copper module?

The communication over a single strand of fiber is achieved by separating the transmission wavelength of the two devices. The GLC-BX40-D-I, GLC-BX40-DA-I, and GLC-BX40-U-I SFPs also support Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) functions according to the industry-standard SFF-8472 Multisource Agreement (MSA). This feature gives the end user the ability to monitor real-time parameters of the SFP, such as optical output power, optical input power, temperature, laser bias current, and transceiver supply voltage. The term " Ethernet cable" is somewhat of a misnomer. You will likely actually be referring to a CAT5, CAT5e, CAT6 or maybe CAT7 cable that is terminated with an RJ-45 on either end. If terminated correctly, these can be used to connect two Ethernet devices that have a common set of supported protocols. An SFP module will typically present itself as a little box that you insert into a switch or router. You then connect fibre or copper cables to the SFP module using one of the standard connectors. Cisco quality Identification (ID) feature enables a Cisco platform to identify whether the module is certified and tested by Cisco

Remember, when discussing the complex and fast signals involved in such technologies, the whole signal path is very important to achieve a functional communication link. This includes everything in the signal's path: However, they do exist as "Direct Attach Cables". In this form, the modules are attached to either end of the cable, and are not designed to be removed. Both 10G fiber SFP+ and 10G copper SFP+ are 10G transceiver modules with an SFP+ form factor. What sets them apart is that the former uses an optical fiber connector whereas the latter uses an electrical RJ45 connector. Accordingly, 10GBASE-T SFP+ relies on copper twisted pair cables as transmission medium rather than fiber cables. For instance, the max transmission distance of SFP-10G-T-S SFP+ to RJ45 transceiver is 30m over Cat6a or Cat7 cable. The market has also seen a max transmission distance of 80m for an enhanced model SFP-10G-T-80. The 10G-T module is compliant with SFF-8431 and SFF-8432 MSA, featuring low power consumption, high performance, and compact design. The fiber world uses a dizzying array of different standards, so pluggable transervers are the norm there. The copper world on the other hand mostly uses fixed transcievers. From time to time though it is desirable to connect a copper connection to a SFP port, so 100BASE-T SFP transcievers are made.Optical interoperability with 10GBASE XENPAK, 10GBASE X2, and 10GBASE XFP interfaces on the same link

The Cisco 10GBASE-ER Module supports a link length of up to 40 kilometers on standard Single-Mode Fiber (SMF, G.652). Higher power consumption compared to optical connections (especially when multiple units are used in the switch). A more cost-effective solution than replacing 10G SFP+ switches with 10GBASE-T RJ45 switches; A stabler solution than 10G SFP+ to RJ45 media converters. The Cisco 10GBASE-LR Module supports a link length of 10 kilometers on standard Single-Mode Fiber (SMF,G.652).

The communication over a single strand of fiber is achieved by separating the transmission wavelength of the two devices. The GLC-BX80-D-I and GLC-BX80-U-I SFPs also support Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) functions according to the industry-standard SFF-8472 Multisource Agreement (MSA). This feature gives the end user the ability to monitor real-time parameters of the SFP, such as optical output power, optical input power, temperature, laser bias current, and transceiver supply voltage. The SFP spec outlines the signals as well as the termination - in this case directly between the module and the host device. The SFP-10G-ZR-I has a cold start at -40 ⁰ C, the transceiver will be operational except optical traffic is not supported from -40 ⁰ C to -28 ⁰ C, all other low speed features (DOM, I2C, etc.) are operational. The module is fully operational -28 ⁰ C to 85 ⁰ C. The GLC-BX-D and GLC-BX-U SFPs also support Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) functions according to the industry-standard SFF-8472 Multisource Agreement (MSA). This feature gives the end user the ability to monitor real-time parameters of the SFP, such as optical output power, optical input power, temperature, laser bias current, and transceiver supply voltage.
