About this deal

When an aspiring street artist by the name of Grafity watches the tenements outside his home being razed, he finds an unlikely canvas at the one wall still left standing in the debris. And by that I do not mean it’s out to give you Hickman-esque data pages of a setting, with maps, charts, and other manner of infographics. Grafity’s Wall, however, has its own identity that is a masterclass of art and feels, from melancholy to upbeat. The fact that there is such a poetic and thoughtful throughline to this book is just icing on the cake " if the worst thing I can say about Grafity's Wall is you'll be disappointed that it ended, it stands in great company.

He has worked as a shepherd, a pirate, and president of Andorra, but his most rewarding experience in life was inventing bacon. In terms of the obstacles, the closest to a main antagonist is the gangster Mario, who is at least a foil to Jayesh, who does seedy jobs to support himself and his grandmother. It’s about those little moments that you held onto, the memories you treasured or were haunted by, the little rejections, discouragement, and the tiny pats on the back that brought you comfort. Back before the gorgeous, divisive jazz fantasy Blue In Green, Ram V and Anand RK collaborated on this very different graphic novel, a much more grounded coming of age piece following kids growing up in a poor district of Mumbai, hanging out at the wall of the title which – as the name suggests – is the canvas for the member of the group who dreams of being an artist.Grafity’s Wall is a good comic, and despite the use of clichés with regard to what’s going on with the characters, Ram V finds ways to still make the characters feel like real people, trying to deal with real situations (clichés are clichés, after all, because they’re so universal). But as I say that, I also have to praise the colorwork of Jason Wordie here, who brings the world of Mumbai to life here. So reading this story of a bunch of Indian artists, in my favorite medium, in a setting I really knew, I had to stop.

Split into four chapters, each one centres on one of the four kids, what are they aspire to be, and what are the obstacles they have to confront. One kid is a drug dealer and I found his story so generic that it could have taken in any deprived area of any city. It was a book that made me think “is this what everyone feels like all the time when seeing themselves or those who look like them on the page? The vibrant art has a loose energy that mostly looks great, with colors that are unique and attractive. Today, we look at the newly released Dark Horse deluxe edition Grafity’s Wall by Ram V, Anand Radhakrishnan, Aditya Bidikar, and Jason Wordie, with Irma Knivila, Girish Malap and Lizzie Kaye (Editor). I don’t know that I can convey the sheer extent of veracity within this book to those unfamiliar with its setting.

You could understand what just happened by the time you read the third panel in the tier below, but there isn’t that pure clarity, nothing to delineate “this is what happened” in that second beat. Frank Miller, throughout his work, has written about his home of New York and done it in a number of ways to date. And done in the specific cultural context of Mumbai, as a new rap culture seemed to be taking off just a few years back. As much as I like Ram V, and as talented as he is, this is not a book you read for the writing " RK and company's artwork is so electrifying that you wouldn't need a narrative behind it to love it. Crackling with late-evening heat and buoyant from the scent of vegetarian Manchurian, the India-style Japanese restaurant, with its sepia-toned floors and stuffy seating that crowds the edges, fills the lungs of Mumbai with as many sounds, smells, and garish predilections for class bias as anywhere else.

It was the first Indian story by an-almost all-Indian creative team that I’d read in American comics.
