About this deal

The Fan brother’s spectacularly detailed graphite work is as sumptuously detailed and painstakingly rendered as always, and they use both shadow and light and limited pops of stunning color to enhance their storytelling in a remarkable way… [t]he story is elegantly told with a clear anti-consumerist, anti-greed messaging.” - Booklist Starred Review. Barnabus and his friends in the failed project section of the lab are not perfect and this book is a celebration of being different. The green rubber suits want to recycle the failed projects and turn them into perfect pets but Barnabus and his friends dash to freedom to find a world where they can be accepted for who they are. This is a great message for young readers; they should be proud of who they are and should celebrate their differences. The story is also about realising your hopes and dreams and shows that with resilience and team-work you can achieve anything. This amorphous, imaginative adventure carries threads of grief and closure that will bypass most youngsters, but they will be enthralled by the magical illustrations and accepting of the notion that the fantastic worlds of dreams and stories truly exist." - Booklist Starred Review . One reason we love this book is because of the characters. They are mixed-up animals. For example, the main character, Barnabus, is an elephant/mouse. Some are really tiny and all of them are cute! Another cool character is a combination of an owl and a lion! All the characters are brave and determined. This suspenseful, poignant and magical story about following your dreams and finding where you truly belong will draw readers into a surreal, lushly detailed world in which perfection really means being true to yourself and your friends. Shortlisted for the National Prize for Children’s Literature “Nati per Leggere” in the 3-6 years old category. Nati per Leggere. This endearing picture book, with graphite and digital illustrations, will rouse justice-minded children to action with its reminders of the important things in life.” - School Library Journal, Starred Review.

A heartfelt, timely allegory celebrating diversity, bravery, and solidarity.” - Kirkus Starred Review . Only the humans - who play a rather small part in this story - are depicted rather dull in comparison to them. Our last reason we love this book is because it teaches good lessons. One of the lessons is “Be yourself, even if you’re not perfect.” We like this lesson because you should always be yourself. Don’t try to be someone else. Another lesson is “If we work together, nothing is impossible.” When we work together in groups on our research projects, it’s always amazing. The last lesson is “Don’t give up.” The animals never give up and keep on trying. The Barnabus Project won the 2020 Governor General's Literary Prize for young people's literature — illustrated books. The Darkest Dark is about a boy who transitions from being afraid of the dark to wanting to explore every corner of the universe. Astronaut Chris Hadfield collaborated with Toronto-based writer Kate Fillion on the book, which is illustrated by The Fan Brothers. Published by Tundra Books in Canada, Little, Brown Books for Young Readers in the U.S., and Macmillan Children's Books UK, acquired world rights to the book, excluding North American English and Canadian French. So we think you should read The Barnabus Project to your students today. It is awesome and we think you will love it too! A funny and tender picture book. . . . [V]isual surprises and pleasures abound in this cathartic delight for children.” — Wall Street Journal
