About this deal

Pop and Ma Larkin celebrate sex, youth, and vitality. In each novella in the series, Pop Larkin kisses, caresses, and pinches most of the women that he encounters. Ma Larkin expects this behaviour and approves of it. When told that Pop has kissed the middle-aged Miss Pilchester, she responds, "Do her good. Make her sleep all the sweeter." The only thing that really grated on me was Pop going around kissing all the women on the mouth with unwarranted "velvety passion"--and this would appear to include his adult daughter. That made me cringe; it was badly out of place. The Darling Buds of May is a novella by British writer H. E. Bates published in 1958. It was the first of a series of five books about the Larkins, a rural family from Kent. The title of the book is a quote from William Shakespeare's Sonnet 18: Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? / Thou art more lovely and more temperate: / Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, / And summer's lease hath all too short a date; [...] Catherine was successful in being offered the role of Mariette Charlton, née Larkin, eldest Larkin daughter. The family that inspired hit TV series The Darling Buds of May". Evening Standard. UK. 18 October 2006. Archived from the original on 20 February 2014 . Retrieved 18 January 2014.

In 1931, he married Madge Cox, his sweetheart from the next road in his native Rushden. They moved to the village of Little Chart in Kent and bought an old granary and this together with an acre of garden they converted into a home. It was in this phase of his life that he found the inspiration for the Larkins series of novels -The Darling Buds of May, A Breath of French Air, When the Green Woods Laugh, etc. - and the Uncle Silas tales. Not surprisingly, these highly successful novels inspired television series that were immensely popular. Bates was influenced by Chekhov in particular, and his knowledge of the history of the short story is obvious from the famous study he produced on the subject. He also wrote his autobiography in three volumes (each delightfully illustrated) which were subsequently published in a one-volume Autobiography. I watched the BBC TV series of 'The Darling Buds Of May', long before I read the book, but I was captivated by the characters and the Actors & Actresses who brought them to life, and now having read the book I can truly say the casting was right on target. Many of his stories depict life in the rural Midlands of England, particularly his native Northamptonshire. Bates was partial to taking long midnight walks around the Northamptonshire countryside - and this often provided the inspiration for his stories. Bates was a great lover of the countryside and its people and this is exemplified in two volumes of essays entitled Through the Woods and Down the River.

Who's in The Larkins cast?

In the first novella, Pop, Ma, and Mariette Larkin attempt to beguile Cedric Charlton, a timid and naive tax inspector, into abandoning his investigation of their finances. Their ultimate goal is for Mariette, who is secretly pregnant at the age of seventeen, to marry "Charley" and thus provide a father for her baby. Ultimately Mariette develops true feelings for Charley and they do become engaged. Charley is never told of the pregnancy, which turns out to be a false alarm.

She's also been able to spend more time with her dogs and husband of 35 years, British actor Roger Frost (The Bourne Identity). Catherine Zeta Jones as Mariette The title of the first book — and the subsequent 90s television adaptation — is a quote from William Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18. H.E. (Herbert) Bates had a way that I found similar to Enid Blyton's of describing in rich detail the food and drink that was consumed, and the after affects. In a tiny book, so many words are deeply devoted to the characters and food. The plot in all essence, is rather thin – it basically consists of Pop and the other Larkins distracting Charley every time he wants to talk about tax (usually with food, but often with alcohol or their attractive daughter Mariette) and the whole book reads like one 1950′s English country holiday. Picnic baskets, strawberries, whole legs of roasted pork, huge bacon and egg breakfasts, this book is capable of setting off deep cravings you didn’t know existed!I have always enjoyed British comedy and The Darling Buds of May was a comedy drama television series that aired for two years from 1991-1993. Set in Kent, where I myself lived for four years, the series followed the life of the Larkin family. It starred David Jason (from 'Only Fools and Horses' fame) as Pop Larkin, and Catherine Zeta-Jones ('The Mask of Zorro') played his eldest daughter Mariette.

Montgomery, the only boy, had been named after the general. Primrose had come in the Spring. Zinnia and Petunia were twins and they were the flowers Ma liked most. Victoria, the youngest girl, had been born in plum-time. His short story 'The Mill' featured as the extract in the first paper of the AQA English Language GCSE in 2019.The Darling Buds of May — starring David Jason and Pam Ferris — was one of ITV’s highest rated television comedy-drama series, winning over fans and critics alike during its three-season run. Ma and Pop Larkin and their five children – Mariette, Montgomery, Zinnia, Petunia and Primrose are returning home from a lovely outing to get fish and chips and some ice cream. When they arrive home, eldest Mariette notices a strange man in the yard, looking like he’s been waiting for them. Three hundred girls auditioned for the part of Mariette before Catherine Zeta Jones was found. The series launched Catherine's career, and she is now considered a Hollywood A-lister.
