About this deal

Brenda Janowitz has woven together a beautiful tale about family, secrets, and forgiveness in a manner that only a master storyteller can do. And they were jumbling, the images, the faces: Peter standing tall with his news of the future, and Ray pulling his chair closer, and then their mother, her mother, the metallic sheen of her eyes and the clawed hands of all that worry and hurt. Kate could see herself too, could see the four of them now sat around the table, existing in the same space together. Surviving. Really, she thought, they were all strange, troubled individuals but beside each other, they were very clearly a family. You could not call it anything else. It was all they had, and it might be enough. This fast paced psychological thriller hooks you from the very first sentence. The story so well told I gave up trying to figure out who did it and just enjoyed the twists and turns and surprises with an I did not see that coming ending which will make you think...wait what?? Wow! Well, well, well... remind me never to attend a dinner party with Richard J. Parker. His party games start with lies, add in a little betrayal, how about MURDER, followed by suicide, and you know, maybe some more MURDER. It is a bit mad but never strays into unbelievable and it is wildly entertaining with a great ending.

Marie: The fitness freak; the flirt; who seeked everyone else’s attention except for her husband’s. He drives to Rhys house and finds Juliette with Rhys in her arms and she said it was an accident but when she told him what happened he wanted to go to the police, it was Kathryn that killed Rhys, Jakob, she just got Juliette to cover Rhys death up. Throughout the book, we readers get to see many of the interactions with the mother. And they are such frustrating moments when you have someone who is doing terrible, unforgivable things, but they are convinced that they are in the wrong. There's no reasoning, there's no compromise, there are just words that spin and spin and spin until she runs out of steam and changes the subject. And every one of these scenes is just so well-written.

I really didn’t like the characters and I found it hard to tell them apart. There are 4 couples, including our narrator and his wife, and I keep forgetting who was married to who and what made them different from the other couples. I understand that the author wanted to throw the readers off by who the killer was by adding more characters, but for me it didn’t work. They just blended together. It is the further opinion of this reviewer that this book would be much better served if it was marketed as Woman's Fiction; rather than Romantic Comedy. A complete misfit of friends but it worked for the story, and you know as well it happens every day. There is always one person who goes as it's obligatory, not because they like any of the other people, and it's always because it's the women who are friends. I loved all the descriptions of location and food, and even enjoyed picturing some of the fashion choices. I could definitely relate to a lot of the Jewish factors and understood the humor

Sarah: The supermodel, the beauty who had it all – filthy rich husband, a loving daughter and huge ass home and dresses. In addition to the friendships between the couples are the relationships between each of the spouses and I loved how Tracy highlighted that we never really know what happens between closed doors.

Such a shame. I would read other books from this author - I noticed he writes mostly true crime though, and I only read fiction.

The book centers around four couples that reunite at a dinner party. Things are going great until the couples engage in a game of trust and truth, that unfortunately has the party ending with hard feelings. The next morning, one of these 8 people is found dead and the others wonder if the game had anything to do with it. Ursella and Edmond Rothschild ( Henry’s parents): Down to earth people. Sylvia could take a lesson. Most likely memories will surface for many Jews... from years of Passover dinners themselves... it did for me....Despite the ending, however, I still think this one is worth reading. This author was on to something, and I foresee better work in the future.
