The more I thought about it, the more I thought it could’ve been a sixteen year old girl’s diary, full of angst and drama about boys and kissing. I didn't care about Zoe or her love life, given that nothing much happened, even if I cared about her family's drama. It was hard to read at times and more than a little bit frustrating, but I loved that it didn’t sugar coat anything or make everything easy. Zoe can’t understand why her parents argue so much but slowly comes to realize it has something to do with Jane begrudging Simon’s ill father.

And this is my problem when it comes to having more than one love interest in a book, only one of them is going to win.

She has lived with what has happened to her for the past year, feeling guilty, yet hiding her feelings at the same time. Through the letters, Zoe begins to reveal the truth of her crime and discovers the power of friendship, forgiveness, and redemption. He truly cares about Zoe and it is clearly seen by his actions when he sees her or is hurt by her in some way.

Winner of the Waterstone's Children's Book Prize 2013, KETCHUP CLOUDS tells the story of one teenage girl with a very big secret. He is not only her confidant but her proxy – it transpires that his wife was having an affair with his brother.The novel was shortlisted for numerous awards and was praised by other authors, by the press and by book bloggers. I really disliked how Ms Pitcher built him up as something (crisps on his chin *sigh*) for the majority of the book just to completely tear that apart and assassinate his character. ETCHUP CLOUDS is a story of resilience and self-discovery that encourages us to stay true to ourselves no matter how difficult it may be. Because that is the exact* percentage of people I know who adored The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson.

Zoe is also ridiculously patronising to Harris (to facilitate exposition), heavy-handed, reductive, disrespectful and depressingly ignorant in a way wikipedia could have fixed.Whether it is sweet little Dot or troubled Soph I found it refreshing that the book allowed an input into her family life.
