About this deal

If you want to use my recipe above, for the 16cm sphere cake, we’ll use the conversions for a 9″/23cm cake pan: I find that the plain flour gives me a better density and allows me to control the rise of the cake with the baking powder. You can also freeze the cake whole. To do this, refrigerate the cake until the frosting is firm, a couple of hours. Then wrap the whole cake in plastic wrap, twice and freeze for up to two months. Whole Egg: I use whole eggs because I love the richer flavor it gives. Make sure your eggs are at room temperature to make sure the batter doesn’t curdle. If you forget to take your eggs out of the fridge ahead of time, you can put them under hot water. So, if you’re looking for 6-inch cake tins, 8-inch cake tins, rectangle cake tins or some standard cake baking tins, we’ve got everything you could possibly want to perfect your bakes. What to look for in a cake tin

My cake pans all have a depth of between 3 – 4 inches (about 7.5 – 10 cm). You definitely want to use a cake pan that has a minimum depth of 3″ (7.5 cm), to allow for the rise. How many you use will depend on the size of the cake. You can use more than one, placed at intervals, if necessary, especially if you are baking a long cake. This is how you do it: If you are baking large cakes, whether madeira cake or not, these baking strips also come in handy, you can use them on their own, or in conjunction with flower nails. Converting round to square cake pans Sugar: You can’t have cake without sugar. It provides moisture, flavor and structure so don’t skimping! I used just granulated sugar in this recipe but it’s made to be adaptable so you can make a brown sugar cake by just swapping the granulated sugar for brown sugar. Spread the jam over one of the cakes, then spread the whipped cream over the jam layer. Place the second cake on top to create a sponge sandwich.

Are you planning to also fill it with jam and icing? As that would give it at least an additional half and inch. Then the fondant on top of that too. I know that still means there isn’t much cake itself. When you say layer cake, you mean, just filled with icing and jam, don’t you? You are not talking about 2 cakes placed on top of each other, which would be a tiered cake. The cake calculator is designed for the home kitchen, and all you need to bake the cakes is a cake tin, a simple electric mixer or mixing bowl, a wooden spoon, a spatula and a handful of ingredients. The traybake and layer cake make up to 40 servings, and the cupcakes and fairy cakes make up to 24 cakes. If you're baking for larger numbers, simply re-run the calculator for a second batch. If the cake is sliced, place the slices in an airtight container. You can also individually wrap each slice in plastic wrap if you want to remove one at a time. Place the container in a freezer bag and squeeze out all the excess air. You can store them in the freezer for up to 2 months. Bring a little water to the boil in a pan, reduce the heat to a simmer and suspend a heatproof bowl over the simmering water. (Do not allow the base of the bowl to touch the water.) Add the chocolate to the bowl and allow to melt. Spread the melted chocolate over the top and sides of the cake.

When planning a celebration cake it's worth knowing how many portions your cakes will serve. We have put together this handy table to help guide you when deciding the sizes of your cakes. To level the cake, once you’ve released it from the cake tin, put a saucer in the cake tin and place the cake on top of it. You could then just slice off the dome using the top of the cake tin as a marker. How long does Madeira Cake Last? If the cake is partially sliced, cover any cut sections with plastic wrap or a cake dome. Place all the slices in an airtight container. It can stay at room temperature for a day or refrigerated for up to a week. How to freeze the cake The cake will easily last a week (even 2) if kept in an airtight container, to stop it drying out. This means that if you are decorating it, you can take a couple of days for complicated ideas! Just remember to use a milk free buttercream icing! Rainbow Madeira CakeFor a rainbow look when you slice the cake, just divide the batter up into 2 or 3 portions and colour with food colouring of your choice. In reply to a question posed by a reader, how to know whether to line or not, as written in my recipe card: Add the vanilla and turn the mixer to low-medium speed. Pour in the heavy whipping cream and mix until it's well combined. Turn the mixer up to medium-high speed for 1-3 minutes until the frosting is nice and fluffy. Place the room temperature butter and the granulated sugar in a large bowl and use an electric mixer with the whisk attachment to beat them for 1-2 minute. Add the oil and beat at full speed for another minute.

Gradually beat the egg mixture into the butter and sugar mixture, adding only a little egg mixture at a time and making sure it is well incorporated before adding more, until all of the egg mixture has been incorporated and the mixture is well combined. Hi Anne, firstly, you need to decide how many the cake is going to feed. A “standard size” is usually an 8″ or 9″ round cake tin. Please Note: Customised or personalised items are excluded from the regulations and cannot be returned. Due to food safety concerns, ready-made cakes are not subject to return unless considered faulty or not fit for purpose. If you’re making them more than one day in advance, you’ll want to freeze them. Place the plastic wrapped layers in a freezer bag, removing the excess air, and freeze on a flat surface. In a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, beat the butter at full speed until it's pale and fluffy, 2-3 minutes.

I hate all specially formulated cake release, and only ever use butter for greasing. Reduce the leavening agent, in this instance, the baking powder. I would suggest using 1 tsp instead of 2, so half the amount for the 11″. It’s one of my favourite plain cakes. I love using Madeira Cakes for celebration cakes because its dense texture makes it easier to handle and it lasts for up to 2 weeks. Not only does it last a long time, its dense texture makes it the perfect cake for decorating with buttercream and fondant (sugar paste).
