The Fluval brand (by Hagen) has become one of the most well known names amongst fish keepers and it is for good reason. For many years now they have provided one of the highest, if not the highest level of quality when it comes to aquariums, filters and other accessories fish keepers have come to know over time. They have expanded their range over time but the quality has stayed the same.

Internal Filters are an excellent option for small to medium sized aquaria. They are simple and easy to set up, they sit just inside the aquarium itself meaning they can be easily installed into any fish tank, with no troublesome pipes and hoses. They will also work well as a powerhead for water circulation, with the added bonus of the extra filtration. It is worth noting that you should clean your filters impellor every couple of weeks to ensure it is functioning normally and keeping the water moving around the tank. U series underwater filters offer superior water purification, movement and aeration capabilities and have been designed for use in both fresh and saltwater applications. For alternate cleaning. If sponge is the only media available for your internal filter it is tasked with performing the roles of both mechanical and biological filtering. The sponge needs frequent cleaning, yet cleaning risks the bacteria colony. The solution is two sponges, so that they can be cleaned alternately, or even replaced alternately, and the bacteria remains intact. Let us say that you want an internal filter that is capable of providing complete filtration. The more media the better, as it means more cleaning power and more waste reduction power.

Fluval U series filters provide the option of setting the flow output in 3 different positions, a key benchmark in underwater filtration. The Adjustable 3-Way Flow Control feature (available in the Fluval U2, U3 and U4 models) lets you position the water flow output to meet your specific needs. The Top Output setting provides maximum circulation and oxygenation, the Integrated Spray Bar setting provides a gentle, even flow for planted aquariums, and the Bottom Output setting is for deep-water agitation.

In most situations, an external filter would be the better choice. Canister, power filter, wet/dry sump, refugium, all have the advantage of not taking up any space inside the fish tank. They are also all capable of holding more media than internal filters. However, some situations make it difficult to install an external filter on a fish tank. For example, if the tank is located in such a way that there are no available spaces behind, nor at the bottom, then your only choice might be to use an internal filter. For simple biological filtration, an air-driven sponge filter would suffice. However, a pump-driven internal filter offers increased circulation and better mechanical filtration.Large pallet items like aquariums are deemed delivered successfully with no damage once the the driver has left the property. If a report of damage is submitted after the driver has left we may be unable to assist with replacements. We recommend refusing a damaged delivery, this is the fastest resolution. Internal filters are the most popular type of filter on the market, with the biggest choice of models and probably the most varied group of people using them — from beginners to nano owners to quarantiners to big cichlid and oddball keepers. Internal filters are readily available and have to cope with a huge range of situations. What I want from any internal is versatility and reliability, as they are often the only form of filtration used in the aquarium. If you can use an external filter, that should be your first choice. They provide advantages at all three types of filtration (mechanical, biological, and chemical) over even the best internal filter out there. However, if you must have an internal filter, then this is the one that I would recommend. Any of the Fluval U-series, starting with the U2, all the way to the U4 will provide complete filtration. The smallest model, the U1, will not provide complete filtration.

In terms of features this filter has a three-way flow, offering water flow from the top outlet, the bottom outlet or the built- in, vertically-mounted spraybar in the middle. The flow from the top and bottom outlet is directionally controllable, and a Venturi is supplied.

A simple media upgrade is the polyester pad, though with some models it appears to be more about selling the pads as a disposable and hence replacable item more than it actually appears to benefit. Carbon inserts have visible benefits as they remove dyes from water, odours and traces of medications. They remove chlorine too. But, for me, the best media option of all is extra biological media. As with the double sponge scenario, one doing the mechanical filtering and leaving the other to do the biological filtering, is better than one media that is tasked to do two jobs. In my book, extra biological means a better filter. Fluval U Underwater Filter provides complete and efficient 3-stage filtrationto create superior aquarium water quality. All models come with a Bio-Foam filter pad to remove large particles. The larger 2 sizes also include a Poly-Carb pad to assist with removal of fine particles, chemicals and odours. They also have the addition of Biomax filter nodes to assist with biological filtration. If your filter fits into the rear corner you may not want a water flow that is only unidirectional. Having the option of being able to direct the flow left to right and/or up and down gives greater flexibilty and is a function easily achieved by the manufacturer at little cost. Highly recommended. This could be the best internal filter system available in the hobby, in the humble opinion of this reviewer. Please know that I do not own every model of internal filters out there. I am basing this on the ones that I have owned over the years, but there are a few models that I have not tried. However, I have researched the ones commonly available in the U.S., and this line appears to be the best out there.
