Alongside Kay, Naomi de Pear and Katie Carpenter were appointed developers and executive producers of the series. I'm not sure if understanding things sooner would have helped me enjoy the story more but I know my confusion kept me from caring as much about Natalie and Kit. The book has already been praised as “riveting” (Megan Miranda) and “bingeworthy” (Caroline Kepnes), and it’s sure to be one of fall’s must-read crime novels.The partners deliver a few punchlines of their own in this fast-moving story that’s replete with twists and danger. This often means being literally elbow-deep in gore (during C-sections or, as we see in one of the opening scenes, keeping a prolapsed umbilical cord where umbilical cords are preferably kept until the baby is out). This is one of those novels where information is revealed slowly, and seems to be out of place and random, but it is all brought together beautifully at the end. Adam meets a trainee doctor, Shruti, and helps her deliver her first baby although the patient (the same from earlier) shouts racist abuse at her; as an act of subtle revenge, Adam stitches her caesarean section incision so as to misalign her dolphin tattoo.

On the positive side I enjoyed the writing style and would gladly read more of this authors work in the future. That’s not my jam, so the only magic trick I wanted to see is for that part of the story to disappear. In trying to figure out what didn't work for me, I came to the conclusion that there was just too much build up and not enough payoff. With shades of Brit Bennett’s The Vanishing Half and Liane Moriarty’s Nine Perfect Strangers, This Might Hurt is a tense psychological thriller with an eye towards larger themes.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer Harry Vance slips out of his lover’s bed for a mysterious nighttime meeting. THIS MIGHT HURT is an outstanding psychological thriller on every level, from its immediately-intriguing cult thriller premise to the complex layers readers will discover within its pages.
