Some patients are defined as "glaucoma suspect" if for example the optic nerve shows signs of possible damage yet there are no frank visual field changes.
Approximately 1 in 10 people defined as "glaucoma suspect" may later develop glaucoma. Frequent checks are advised. Patients are often assessed yearly in the NHS. More frequent assessments may be advised depending on the situation. Suspicion of glaucoma may arise from suspect discs or suspect visual fields. Depending on the pattern of field loss, suspect fields are less concerning more often than suspect discs. Otherwise, optic disc appearance may be very misleading in some patients, especially those with congenitally anomalous optic discs and very small or large optic discs. |
