in case you don't know, the original story is about a young girl named juliet, who moves to portland for a summer internship with her favorite author.

My story, my truth, my life, my voice, all of that had to be protected and put out into the world by me. I mean hell at several times as I read this book I thought I would give it 1 star and at other times I was convinced that I was reading a 5 star book. Some of her advice and assistance is solid, but takes nothing into account of the marginalized communities and cultures she blithely wanders through or steals from. I think I tripped myself up with this one because I hyped it massively to myself and I seriously wish I’d read the book (which I own) before the graphic novel.As a lesbian latinx woman from the Bronx, Juliet thinks she has a reasonable understanding of womanhood, queerness, and her identity as a woman of color. There's one paragraph in which Juliet's at her aunt and uncle's, and her uncle is Jewish so they're eating Shabbat dinner, and it's just so cute.

This specific type of feminism who tells me to embrace my pussy (my pussy and I are on excellent terms, thanks for the concern), while important and undoubtedly groundbreaking at its time, is simply patronizing, and can't be considered the holy grail of feminism. Reading Juliet Takes a Breath by Gabby Rivera was one of the most positive, transformative, illuminating experiences I’ve had this year.I loved the art, the warm colors, and best of all, the artist’s appreciation for what women’s bodies actually look like.
