The first notice is not binding. It must be given to your employer at least eight weeks before you intend to take any SPL and ShPP. It basically lets your employer know that you qualify for SPL and ShPP and would like to use it. This cleverly written book, modeled after an owner’s manual, provides clear and concise instructions on how to care for a newborn, making it a valuable resource for new fathers. The New Father: A Dad’s Guide to The First Year by Armin A. Brott What I didn’t like about this book is it trips over itself to be inclusive to dads of all types. So, it has helpful You're a hero if you go to the doctor's appointments with her. (When we went to our first appointment, every pregnant woman had their SO with them.) The book begins with an overview of the anatomy and physiology of childbirth, explaining the changes that occur during each stage of labor. Simkin also provides information on the different types of births, including natural, medicated, and cesarean deliveries, allowing expectant fathers to make informed decisions about their partner’s birth preferences.

Men also tend to have exaggerated fears of what could go wrong with their jobs," says Brott. "Your boss may be more accommodating than you expect." Changing Priorities But Goldman and Brott agree that you shouldn't dismiss your concerns, and a lot of important things need to be worked out over the nine months of pregnancy. One of the better pregnancy books for expectant fathers I've been reading (I'm in the middle of about 5, but this is the first I've finished...) People who aren't parents might assume that parenthood causes an inward retreat; after all, new parents seem to talk about nothing but feeding and nap schedules. But Brott says that fatherhood often spurs people to have a wider and more comprehensive view of the world.

Paternity leave and pay

Under the basic right, you can’t take more than four weeks’ parental leave a year for each child (if you have two children the maximum amount would be eight weeks’ leave a year). However, your employer may vary this.

For simplicity, this guide uses the term ‘partner’ only but it applies in the same way to separated fathers who share the main responsibility for raising the child. If you are expecting a child on or after 5 April 2015 you may be able to use Shared Parental Leave (SPL) to take more time off work in the first year to care for your child if your partner agrees to bring her maternity leave and pay to an early end. The maximum amount of leave that you could take is 50 weeks because your partner’s entitlement to maternity leave is 52 weeks and two of those weeks are compulsory so cannot be converted into SPL. The maximum amount of pay you could claim is 37 weeks (39 weeks’ Statutory Maternity Pay or Maternity Allowance minus the two compulsory weeks of maternity leave). ShPP is paid at the same flat rate (or 90 per cent of your normal earnings if that is lower) as statutory paternity pay. But even though you may not always get a welcoming reception, you need to stay involved. For instance, Brott and Goldman say that you should be accompanying your wife to at least some of the doctor appointments, even if you may feel a little awkward being there. As well as paternity leave which is restricted to the time of the birth and Shared Parental Leave which is restricted to the first year of a child’s life, many working parents also qualify for unpaid parental leave. As with paternity leave all your terms and conditions continue, except your right to receive your normal wage or salary, and you are protected from detriment or dismissal because you have tried to take or have taken a period of SPL. Other rights that may help you combine paid work with looking after yourchild include unpaid parental leave, the right to request flexible working andemergency time off for dependants. If the total amount of SPL and paternity leave you have taken does not exceed 26 weeks you have the right to return to the same job with the same rights and terms and conditions. Overall, The New Dad’s Survival Guide is a must-read for first-time fathers who want a straightforward, easy-to-understand resource that covers all aspects of raising a newborn. With its practical advice and relatable tone, this book will equip new dads with the knowledge and confidence they need to thrive in their new role as a parent. #4. The Birth Partner: A Complete Guide to Childbirth For Dads, Doulas, And Other Labor Companions by Penny SimkinOverall, this book is moderately informative, but generally didn't contain any revelatory information. There were also some points where Brott's advice ran contrary to the guidance of my local hospital—perhaps a regional difference, or perhaps Brott's book is having a hard time keeping up to date. Even though this book is in its 5th edition and was updated within the past two years, it was first published some 25 years ago and in many ways feels even older. Which brings me to my two complaints. Kudos to Brott for writing a book that doesn’t second-guess whether the new father reading his book is reading it because he WANTS to and not because his wife made him read it. Indeed, Brott assumes that the father has as many, if not more, worries and questions (and duties) than the expectant mother. Pregnancy is just as rough (mentally and spiritually, at least) on the daddy-to-be. Physically, too, if one counts the many couvade symptoms (sympathy pains) that a father can succumb to... and I did. To qualify for ShPP, your average earnings must be equal to at least the Lower Earnings Limit in the eight weeks up to the 15th week before the expected week of birth. (You can take SPL without qualifying for or claiming ShPP). The book is broken up into each month of pregnancy, which helps if you want to take it slow as it progresses.

This was a pretty comprehensive book. I feel much more equipped with what to expect, and learned a lot of useful tips. If your job becomes redundant while you are on SPL you have the right to be offered a suitable and appropriate alternative vacancy if one exists with your employer. This new post must have terms and conditions that are not substantially less favourable than your previous job. Returning to work after SPL This empowering book offers practical advice and guidance for fathers to help nurture strong, confident daughters in today’s complex world. Fatherhood: The Journey From Man to Dad by Billingsley, Givens, And Johnson

The Expect Father is written with the dad in mind, obviously. It's laid out month by month, noting what the baby is experiencing, what the mother is experiencing, and what the father should probably be thinking, feeling, and doing. she must have given notice to her employer that she intends to bring her SMP or MA entitlement to an early end. From 1 October 2014, an expectant father or the partner of a pregnant woman is entitled to unpaid time off work to attend up to two ante-natal appointments. The maximum amount of time off work that you can take for each appointment is 6.5 hours. Paternity leave must be taken within 56 days of the birth of the child. If the baby is born prematurely then you have 56 days from the first day of the week in which the child was due to take your leave. Notifying your employer When you have a kid, you start thinking about stuff you didn't think about before," says Brott. "You start thinking about childcare, neighborhood development, and the state of education in this country. You start worrying about landfills and disposable diapers."
