About this deal

Nuances of chocolate, a strong coffee flavor, and a touch of vanilla and possibly hazelnut come to mind when thinking of coffee liqueur. But even though you expect a coffee liqueur to taste like, well, coffee, not all of them do. Surprisingly, some might only have a slight coffee flavor, taste sugary and overly sweet, and don't provide the dark, rich flavor of coffee that you expect in this liqueur. It is worthwhile to sample a few to see which one you prefer for your drinking pleasure. It has a fantastic earthy, roasty nuttiness to it, a bittersweet chocolate note, and a rich sweetness from the cane sugar,” says Tin Le, beverage director of Louisville’s Ensō. “And there’s an extra depth of flavor from the chicory.”

This type of liquor has a range of as low as 5 percent on up to 40 percent alcohol by volume (ABV), depending on the brand you choose. The base of the bottle is made from roasted French chicory, Madagascar vanilla, and Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee beans roasted at a range of levels to amplify every flavor profile of the bean.Coffee and alcohol, what better two ingredients to combine to make a delicious liqueur. The type of coffee beans and how they were brewed can affect the taste of coffee liqueur. The way the coffee beans are processed can vary from being cold-pressed brewed to roasted. From arabica beans to Brazilian beans and other types of coffee beans, the flavor notes of coffee liqueurs are expressed through the beans, botanicals, chocolate, and liquor base used. Rum, vodka, amaro, and Jägermeister are just a few of the different liquor bases used in these liqueurs. When I’m looking for a coffee liqueur, I want something that brings intense coffee flavor in a small quantity,” says Christian Favier, bar manager at The Ordinary in Charleston, South Carolina. He’s tried many of the bottles on the market, but Fratelli Branca Borghetti remains his favorite. “Its punchy intensity gives me a ton of great coffee flavor when I use it liberally, and a beautiful subtle bitterness when I use it sparingly.”

St. George NOLA Coffee Liqueur is our favorite coffee liqueur," says Darlin Kulla, the beverage director and sommelier at KNEAD Hospitality + Design in Washington, D.C. "A distinctive mix of freshly roasted Arabica beans, French-roasted chicory root, and Madagascar vanilla, it's complex and earthy with a touch of sweetness. It is delicious by itself as an after-dinner drink but also makes the best White Russian." Production nuances shift from producer to producer, though most coffee liqueurs are made by infusing a base spirit with ground coffee or coffee beans and then adding additional flavors and sweeteners, like vanilla beans and sugar cane. This New Orleans-inspired bottle is made by one of the bar world’s more beloved craft brands, St. George Spirits. It is also a personal favorite of Lindsay Dukes, the general manager of Bar Marilou, based in the Big Easy, who admits that her choice may be slightly influenced by her current ZIP code. “The notes of chicory coffee in this liqueur bring out the right amount of bitterness you usually get from a good cup of coffee while retaining these lovely dark roast notes,” she says. Kate Dingwallis a sommelier and spirits writer. She has been writing about the bar and spirits world for years and has her BarSmarts and WSET certification. Made by the same people behind Fernet-Branca and based on a recipe developed in the 1860s by bartender Ugo Borghetti, the process starts by making coffee from Arabica and Robusta beans sourced from three different regions in Italy. The coffees are blended, steeped in a neutral grain alcohol, and sweetened with sugar.
