Going in, I wasn’t sure: my experience with Puerto Rico was previously with Bacardi – the bestselling rum in the world and the choice of expatriates in far flung and remote corners of the world such as where I used to be – and Bacardi is a well-meaning, reasonably tasty but generally boring mixer — I tarred Captain Morgan with the same broad brush. Here, all of the flavors pretty much survive the addition of some ice, with the only exception being a slight reduction in the sweetness. Update: The rum has now been reclassified (by me) as a spiced rum due to the overwhelming vanilla profile…and the fact that it’s now acknowledged as being added-to. The sweetness usually imparted by coke or other mixers that cut the spirit burn is essentially taken over by the spices added to the rum itself. Its rich flavor is the result of using some of the most sophisticated rums to come from over 300 years of traditional Caribbean rum making. Once again, the flavors are unnaturally well-saturated with a viscosity like that of maple syrup (note: I’m referencing real maple syrup — not the fake corn syrup stuff).

He further led raids on Maracaibo, Gibraltar, and Panama before the end of privateering in the Caribbean in 1672. The Vanilla became more noticeable each time I sipped the rum, its flavour grew in leaps and bounds until that was all could taste whenever I tried to steal a sip. As for me, I was defeated by the vanilla flavour which to my palate became cloying over time to such an extent that I actually avoided completing the final tastings of this rum which caused the review to be delayed by a good stretch of time. In making common hooch to appeal to the widest possible audience and lowest common denominator (the US consumer), some of the quality is lost in the quest for sales. While it does work better than the original version, it just doesn’t have the complexity that I’d want to see in a premium rum. But I should add this was largely because of the inclusions and additions (primarily sugar and vanillas), not because of brilliant ageing and blending skills. The actual color of the spirit is clearly visible, making it much more attractive to have on the liquor shelf.
