About this deal

Despite the somewhat predictable outcome the characters were interesting and there was a liberal dose of humour scattered throughout. Take all the North/South divide cliches you know, all the stereotypes of rural Yorkshire, all the basic narrative features of a crime novel, with a smattering of displacement amusement sprinkled on top, stick it in a blender, then pour it onto a page and you will probably end up with something better than this book. Stevens had suspended her from school for assaulting her bully, and her mother had banished from meeting her boyfriend. I know many ebooks are not professionally edited, but most authors such as Gatward use beta readers, family, or friends to provide some quality assurance.

John’s vengeful killer—they knew each other—assaulted him before crushing him to death with a trailer. Thus, Harry takes off for “Herriot country,” familiar as the setting for the television series, “All Creatures Great and Small,” which was based on the books by the Yorkshire vet, James Herriot. This is the first in a series set in Yorkshire, England and featuring Detective Chief Inspector Harry Grimm, 40. Harry and his team find their days are getting longer as they discover that getting to the truth of the matter means having to go through tons of information to find it.I am very much enjoying this series – the characters are interesting and amusing (the author makes excellent use of a puppy as a social lubricant here), and the setting is beautiful and well-described. The readers of Grimm Up North will continue to follow Detective Chief Inspector Harry Grimm to discover what happens. In the sleepy little village he’s moved to, nothing ever happens but a bit of sheep rustling, so Grimm arrives only to be in the centre of a missing person murder enquiry, which then deepens as a body is found.

I was intrigued immediately as I read the first page and was so happy I had the three books together.

I am a sucker for British crime, so I will persevere with one more book in the series, with hope it will improve. I loved Aubreys Dalesman accent for the people of Hawes, it wasn't over the top Yorkshire accent, to me it sounded just like our ex next door neighbour who was a true Dalesman.

Hopefully, the author will reveal where Richard Askew got his source from in subsequent books in the series. These factors prompted the backpacking Sophie to—after ransacking their house—run away unthinkingly and without any exit plan, particularly to hurt her mother. After an almost-bungled sting (Grimm came very close to it being his last operation), his superintendent packs him off to a small town in the Yorkshire Dales. He and his family are able to barely scrape by financially on the meager salary of a state employee (Been there, done that! What makes this even more awkward is that it happens to be true – Charlie’s “editor,” also visiting at the lodge, does in fact do most of the work. He was a detective in the city of Bristol, but was seconded up to rural Wensleydale in Yorkshire when the local inspector went on leave.

Used to city life and high stress, Harry fears his life will now be spent handing out speeding tickets, finding lost sheep, and directing tourists. In this book we see Harry, battle-scarred former paratrooper and current Yorkshire police detective, come up against a world he knows nothing about – online culture. The second book drops most references to Harry's face, the Paras, how gruff Harry is, and something else that I can't remember that was over-used in the first book. The writing is superb and peppered with humour with a clever plot that made me listen in one sitting. that's enough to make me keep this one on my TBR list, though now I'm wondering if I should start with one of Gatward's later books? The descriptions of the locations are wonderful, mentioning many places I have visited (I'm a Yorkshire girl!
