About this deal

Aspherical lenses minimize coma and other types of lens aberrations, even when used at the widest aperture. In this review, I will explore the performance characteristics of the latest 18-55mm AF-P VR version in detail and compare it to both older iterations of 18-55mm AF-S VR II and other Nikon lenses, such as the Nikon 18-140mm VR.

Used on a DX camera it gives the same angle-of-view as a 28-85mm lens gives on a 35mm film or FX digital camera. We use analytic cookies and marketing cookies to learn from user information, personalise advertisements and measure their effectiveness. It does not have a “Normal” and “Active” VR switch, which I personally do not miss since I hardly ever change VR from Normal to Active.

As with Canon's 18-55mm IS upgrade, there are rather more changes from the previous Nikon 18-55mm than at first meet the eye. The D3300 with which it ships completely corrects the distortion if you have Automatic Distortion Correction ON. We've taken a closer look at the image quality and dynamic range impact of the move to a Stacked CMOS global shutter sensor. The 18-55 VR performs quite well here, with falloff only likely to be an issue wide open at 18mm and 24mm, and disappearing on closing the aperture one stop. Your only sharpness limitation will be that there is zero depth-of-field at macro distances; in this shot only some of the face and some of the hands are actually in focus. This can make applying manual focus adjustments trickier than with a smoother, better damped system. Users of D5200 cameras should note that if the standby timer is allowed to expire, the focus position will change when the timer is restarted. Here sharpness is very good in the centre, but can only be considered fair towards the edges of the picture area.
