I didn't' feel attached to anyone, not even the MC even though she spends 500 pages over explaining herself. The relationship between Emma and Rain is lovely, I was sobbing more than once and while I got slightly irritated by Emma’s indecision at times it actually made perfect sense considering their history and the reality of their current lives.while some of the story lines i felt like went on for a while, the continuation of conflicts made it not drag in a boring way.

Though I'm not a mother, I felt with Emmeline and could clearly understand her actions and reactions. His character is so well written, you could feel his emotions right on the surface, simmering under all those powerful, sword wielding, horseback riding, warrior muscles. These people are supposedly in their mid-thirties but I kid you not every character acts like they are 14 years old.But this book could have been way more engaging if (1) Jess Wisecup cut out half of her inner dialogue and (2) she didn’t hate herself so much. I could go on and on about how brilliantly this book was written, but I’ll wrap this up with the most simple, straightforward point- I love this book! Emmeline believes her daughter, Elora, is the Beloved—the conduit with goddess-granted divine abilities prophesied to bring peace to the Three Kingdoms. The plot was promising, I (a 32-year-old woman) was looking forward to reading a badass, 34-year-old mother who would do anything to get her kid back. Just know it does ends on a cliffhanger so be ready to jump into book 2 (which is thankfully already out 😅), which is exactly what I’m about to go do!
