About this deal

When children are first attempting to sound out and blend words or trying to listen for the sounds in words, Cued Articulation can help. Cued Articulation describes how to cue consonant sounds while Cued Vowels describes the 23 standard English vowel sounds.

Cued Articulation can be used for individuals, pairs and small groups and also as an adjunct to basic literacy work in whole-class teaching. Participants were 154 children, aged four to five years, attending a mainstream setting in the South-East of England. Supporting understanding of phonics in this was allows children to begin to blend and segment for reading and writing. To use CA in its most simple form, the practitioner only needs knowledge of the system, 12 coloured pencils and enthusiasm. Teachers found that using the cues not only helped the children with difficulties, but it also raised the sound awareness skills of everyone in the class. In their daily Phonics lessons, they learn to link a sound (phoneme) with its written letter (grapheme). So we support the use of phonics with a visual cue that cues our children to our lips, so while they are listening they are watching how these sounds are formed at the mouth and supporting the development of their lip reading skills as well as their phonics. This is represented by starting the sign where the sound is made so ‘p’ and ‘b’ start on the lips where as ‘k’ and ‘g’ start down on your throat.

This app is intended as a handy reminder of how each of the cues is made, and how it relates to the sound it represents and the letters that spell that sound. This training will give practitioners the skills and knowledge to support children who are presenting with speech sound difficulties. Following a twelve-week intervention period, both groups displayed gains in word-reading ability, with no significant differences between groups. If the child forgets their target sound you can say the word and sign their sound, which often makes them have another try at the word! Children often miss out some of the consonants in the middle of longer words, so you can sign the ones they miss out. They are all voiced and are graded by whether they are made towards the front or back of the mouth and how open or closed the mouth is. Visualising phonics in this way helps the child understand where the sound is made, the shape of the lips as you say the sound, the type of articulation and if the sound is voiced of unvoiced, you will notice some actions use one finger or two fingers. I didn't realise these were flash cards, but are excellent as an addtional resource to support cued articulation and have used them with considerable success to support speech and language in the primary classroom. Each of the 49 sounds (phonemes) which make up the English Phonological System has a separate hand sign. It is a full-colour comprehensive description of Jane Passy's methods for teaching speech and language-challenged children and adults how to make the sounds required for articulate speech.

I use it most for word final sound discrimination; you let the child try on their own, but if they can’t quite hear the sound I model the word again but sign the final sound. This book, with accompanying cards, is a wonderful aid in teaching the articulation of consonant and vowel sounds of English. It will be full colour and be a comprehensive description of Jane Passy's methods for teaching speech and language-challenged children and adults how to make the sounds required for articulate speech. The on-site therapist has introduced me to cued articulation, which is really working in helping him produce sounds he has never been able to say.It includes the colour coding that is central to the program, and provides examples of each sound within everyday words. The afternoon part of the training focuses on the Cued Articulation Approach which can be used within settings and classrooms to support children presenting with speech sound difficulties. We both find Cued Articulation really useful for teaching new sounds – it really helps children to have a sign to attach to the sound. Cued Articulation and Cued Vowels are two companion texts written by Jane Passy to help teach the pronunciation of spoken English.

The empirical paper examines the effectiveness of Cued Articulation as a method to enhance whole-class phonics teaching. The hand movements are logical – each hand movement represents one sound and the cue gives clues as to how and where the sound is produced. The ‘f’ sign actually helps some children achieve the sound as you can push the lip in to make contact with the teeth.
