I enjoyed reading the Meg and Mog stories as a child and had several in the book box in my first classroom. As they land on top of a pyramid, Meg accidentally lets go of her cauldron and poor Mog falls out, so she has to bandage him up. She is trying to conjure up eggs for tea and although she manages to make three eggs, they look rather different to usual.

Helen Nicoll worked with Jan Pienkowski for over forty years, first at the BBC and then on the Meg and Mog stories. Luckily Meg’s spell to save them works fairly well but the dinosaurs are so small that she needs a magnifying glass to see them! Stegosaurus and Diplodocus have cute, friendly expressions but Tyrannosaurus is fierce with a mouthful of sharp teeth. Three scarce first edition hardback copies of the much-loved witch and her cat, Meg and Mog, created by Helen Nicoll and Jan Pienkowski. The story is full of bright colours and shapes and is perfect for a language focus on colours, shapes, food, animals or halloween.

Meg’s spells continue to surprise her and the eggs she makes for supper are even more strange than usual. The illustrations on the double spreads are colourful, bold and humorous and will appeal to toddlers who will enjoy the board book version. It also stimulated a discussion about dinosaurs, what they eat, what their teeth look like and the difference between herbivores and carnivores. Authors / Illustrators I find it really interesting to hear what authors and illustrators enjoy reading or have enjoyed reading with children.Meg, Mog and Owl manage to look after the first two dinosaurs but then a fearsome Tyrannosaurus hatches and wants to eat them all! He has since twice won the Kate Greenaway Medal for Illustration, and has created many instantly recognizable classics. After creating his first book at the age of eight, Jan went on to excel in his chosen field of design, working in such diverse areas as television, theatre and greetings cards.
