About this deal

Jonathan Carroll is fully back to his magical form, creating fully fleshed-out characters whom readers truly FEEL for and connect with. Graham included detailed descriptions of each photo which was good because everyone who looked at them just saw blank photo paper. As if she knew he would need time to look and linger over the choices, Anna Mae was gone quite a while.

I didn't get that same gut-punch-vaguely-nauseous-from-excitement-and-nervousness feeling while reading Mr. The whole book isn’t filled with magic, Graham gets peeks at different lives but those lives are normal lives without magical aspects. And that attitude, that reluctance to even explore what those alternatives were, seemed to become the operating philosophy of the story, which became mired in a mundane navel gazing that squandered the story’s potential. Unfortunately the author keeps changing the rules on the run, seemingly for no logical reason other than to overly complicate the story and create a confusing, messy travel through time. The nonprofit organization Share Our Strength showed that kids are better at math when they start their day with a healthy meal. That sense of needing more is always a key litmus test of any novel for me, and Mr Breakfast passed easily.

Patterson is shown three alternative lives and has the opportunity to visit each one before deciding on which life he wants to live in for good. Shortly after receiving his tattoo, which shows “a bee inside the stomach of a frog inside the stomach of a hawk inside the stomach of a lion,” Patterson encounters a mohawked doppelganger, the Graham Patterson who cut his hair, honed his stand-up, and became the nation’s most popular comedian. The book is full of action and just as full of plot holes, including scenes that are illogical or disconnected from the main narrative.

He will be kidnapped and temporarily reincarnated, dodge ravenous flying dinosaurs, and — most unsettling of all — revisit his hometown, Crane’s View (the setting for several earlier Carroll novels). All we can do is work hard and love hard, try to do the right things without letting our ego trip us up, and hope the boogeymen stay away for another day. Patterson was no tattoo connoisseur or even much of a fan, but these were the most beautiful he had ever seen. Violet Sorrengail did all the normal things one would do as a first-year student at Basgiath War College: made new friends, fell in love, and survived multiple assassination attempts. As always with the exceptionally imaginative Carroll, he creates complex worlds for his hero to inhabit and with clever crossovers between realms that are carefully thought out and fun to explore. I appreciate his gift in transitioning scenes: he is a master of leaving a scene before it ends and then waltzing into the next scene perhaps halfway through the action. If you’re new to Carroll, you might want to try his debut novel The Land of Laughs, which many consider being his high-water mark, instead.
