About this deal

PIC 5: shows the Para EQ settings that I've used to flatten as much as possible the response of the MG30 from the guitar input when it's in STUDIO DIRECT output mode . Below is the frequency response of the "Tweedy" amp model, cab sim disabled, in STUDIO DIRECT output mode (PIC 1). Or use a para eq at the front of the chain, and lose a slot, but more importantly, lose the effect altogether, which is a bummer. Luckily it has an IR loader built in, with about 26-ish (I can't remember exactly) slots for external IR's. I could go back and forth between real tube preamp and digital sim with minimal differences in this case.

When you use good reference playback…if the pa is dialed in correctly…you should get good results, at least to the point where the boards eq solves problems. If you select bypass in the drop down menu you use to select between pedals, it should show a blank space in Quicktone. I really liked the patches that people made, And I think mine may have had some other people that may have been more geared toward their mainland stars, but there was a lot of good stuff in there, out of the box. That's as much or more than the EQing scoop generated by the tone stack of a Fender Blackface with all controls at noon, for the record, albeit with different center frequencies. Perfect for accompanying yourself and practicing your instrument, silently if you wish thanks to the mini-jack headphone output. The built-in drum machine is handy but it doesn't really function that well beyond being "a slightly more interesting sounding metronome". The 4 cables method worked as expected, albeit with a slight comb filtering effect at low volume (reason: the Hot Rod always sends a slight amount of direct sound to the output when its loop is used).

EDIT - for comparison (and to verify that the results above are not due to a flawed test), PIC 7 shows in green the basic frequency response of a Valeton GP100, all FX's disabled, VS the reference signal direct to the board (white line). That's what I was saying to myself yesterday while we were on stage with tube amps (and with the sound engineer struggling to mike them just because he has refused to amplify directly my direct outputs with IR's). With the "flattening para EQ" trick, it becomes much more convincing to my ears (and it diminishes the hiss with some simulations). The unit only has capacity for one external switch and if you plug your favourite expression pedal in, you won't be able to use the extra 2 button footswitch they provide, which is pretty much a must if you're going to gig this thing.Best of both worlds, albeit it can generate some noise, of course, if the proper tools and strategies are not used. Yes, the MG30 seems pre-EQed for recording (or for garden variety PA's / sound systems, often too bassy with modelers).
