New town consisted of wide, planned street of Boroughgate with its own parish church of St Lawrence; earlier settlement of Appleby lay across River Eden in St Michael’s parish, in Bongate (literally ‘the street of the peasants or unfree tenants’), referred to in 1276 as ‘old Appleby where the villeins dwell’ – it was not within area granted borough status by Henry II 1179.The National Trust also host Easter activities for children during half term at the nearby Acorn Bank including an Easter Egg Trail in the grounds and craft activities.

Hire a bike at Hamsterley Forest, about 20 miles away, and explore the graded trails including serious levels of descent and lovely family routes through the tranquil woods. It runs from the northeast end by the cloisters, which were designed in 1811, to the south end by the castle entrance. Appleby is overlooked by the privately owned Appleby Castle, a largely Norman structure that served as home to Lady Anne Clifford in the 17th century. There is controversy regarding the costs met by the Cumbrian taxpayer, whilst the fair brings in significant income for a handful of local businesses and land owners. Every Saturday, Appleby hosts a small, outdoor farmers market in Boroughgate filled with local traders showcasing their weekly produce. In 1881 the then owner, Sir Henry James Tufton, was created Baron Hothfield; his descendants remained in possession until 1961 when castle and estates were sold by auction. The castle is surrounded by 25 acres of parkland and inside is the stronghold of the Clifford Lords.Heading over the plain, the views instantly appear as the ground suddenly falls away, revealing the dramatic chasm of High Cup Nick. The parish church of St Lawrence is Grade I listed and showcases a mix of Medieval architecture from different periods. Appleby Manor Hotel offers a choice of 31 en-suite bedrooms inclulding the fabulous Heelis Suite, plus Garden rooms, Manor House rooms, Deluxe rooms, classic rooms and a choice of family rooms. Appleby-in-Westmorland, or more simply known as Appleby since 1974, is a market town overlooked by the Pennine Range in the Eden Valley. The centre also has two pools; the main pool is 25m long and has four lanes whilst the other is a smaller, learner pool ideal for young children.

With the creation of Cumbria in 1974, the name of the town was changed to preserve the name of the ancient county and as a reminder of the town's heritage. While the UK remained in the European Union, Appleby was in the North West England European Parliament constituency. There is also a good selection of resistance machines and a section of free weights and kettlebells. Dogs love woodland trails, and with plenty of leaves to roll around in, sticks to chase and rivers to jump in, Acorn Bank is a doggy paradise!

The event is volunteer ran by the local community who often host fundraising events on the run up to Halloween and Bonfire Night.
