Editors' Note: As of May 11, 2010, Canon has announced the release of the PowerShot SD4000 IS, a slightly pared-down version of the S90 reviewed here. Banding is non existent on the S90, something that DXOMark does not test for, nor is it included or influence test results. But this chunky yet competent backpack doesn't have a killer feature or look that makes it stand out from some pretty tough competition. Unfortunately it's not a complete coup thanks to the wayward rear Control dial and the slow zoom control. By selecting WB, just hold the [S] button for a moment, and the large front ring selects A/B (amber/blue) WB trim instantly!The power button is located too far to the left, so I usually press the Ring Function button instead. Deepening the mystery is why they would have put an EV adjustment symbol on the ring when it's always active when shooting in Program mode.
Had Canon included this nigh ubiquitous functionality the little S90 might have had it all - on paper at least. However, the S90s performance makes it best suited for portraits, landscapes, and the like--but not for fast-moving subjects. Compare this to a typical pocket digital of a few years ago, like the SD700, which looked awful at ISO 400. Using the batteries and memory card format supplied with the camera (where included), except where indicated. The tiny body might not make for particularly good handling, but it's small enough to carry anywhere and the image quality it produces rarely disappoints.
recently Panasonic have announced their LX-5 and I assume that Leica will come our with D-Lux 5 , so lets wait . The low light mode is a new addition to the Canon range, boosting ISO up to an equivalent ISO12800, with the trade off being that resolution drops to a relatively lowly 2. If you have time to make a photo, the Canon S90 has the patience to work with you and can usually make it happen. Just as other manufacturers have been attempting of late to introduce compacts with the power of a DSLR, the Canon PowerShot S90 is, in effect, a bridge model without that class of cameras' associated bulk and occasional operational obstreperousness. The ability to shoot Raw and Jpeg simultaneously is perfect for me and the very small size means it is easily pocketable (compared to say the G12).
