After the merger, the group continued to purchase other breweries to expand their offer to a larger panel of beers. Alken-Maes was created out of the 1988 merger of two small breweries, Maes, located in Waarloos and Alken.

There, the monks have produced their monastery beer according to traditional methods, which has led to today's proud monastery beer Grimbergen. Ideally drank from its iconic beer glasses, this Belgian beer is suited for any fan of an abbey beer. These official glasses are dishwasher safe, although we do recommend hand washing to ensure maximum longevity.

Introducing the Grimbergen Glass, a remarkable piece of glassware that embodies the rich brewing heritage of Grimbergen Abbey. Both had specialized in pils (Maes was producing Maes pils and Alken Cristal pils) until Maes purchased the Union brewery (based in Jumet) in 1978, which produced Grimbergen beer among others.
