About this deal

This is quite decent and a good option for those that don't want to tolerate overshoot across the refresh range. We also feel the stand design is a little strange, particularly where the legs connect to the pillar, but that's a minor nitpick. It's mainly because the ASUS has more motion artifacts, like dark smears behind fast-moving objects, which is typical for VA panels. The LG 34GN850’s screen is highly-sought after for work from use, so the port could be used to further market it to the masses.

The maximum recorded contrast from the monitor sits at 1120:1 which is high for an IPS panel, but still enough to produce deep blacks and a convincing HDR performance. If the manufacturer does not provide such information, the height is calculated from the diagonal and the aspect ratio. ViewSonic included this feature and it was unusable, LG has decided not to which we feel is a better choice. We now have 200Hz ultrawides like the Acer X35, but this model is a more practical choice especially if you want better color consistency and viewing angles. We're only talking 11% faster, which is nice to have, but reasonably negligible in the grand scheme of things.Options like the Nixeus NX-EDG34S which have in recent times pushed up to 144Hz with VA panels, are still mid-range contenders and don't really get close to what the 34GN850 is offering. However, it's not the best choice for dark room gaming and the stand's poor ergonomics make it harder to adjust the monitor to your optimal viewing position. Horizon Zero Dawn at Ultra settings ran at around 65 to 70 FPS in-game depending on whether the graphics card was overclocked or not, and while this is nowhere near the high 160 Hz refresh rate, Adaptive-Sync (this display is also certified G-Sync Compatible), kept gameplay smooth. On the other hand, the Nixeus has a VA panel with a much higher contrast ratio, allowing it to produce deep and inky blacks. With a contrast ratio of 1000:1, it produces distinct differences between dark and light areas on the screen. This menu is clear, crisp, and responsive, which isn’t something we can say about a lot of monitors.

You can opt to overclock the display in the OSD to unlock the full 160Hz, but you’ll have to sacrifice either 10-bit colors for 8-bit, or use YUV422 chroma-subsampling while keeping 10-bit colors. The redesigned stand on the LG 34GN850 is considerably less wide than its predecessors, but it still needs 12. In summary, the LG 34GN850 monitor features a 34-inch display with a resolution of 3440 x 1440 pixels. In the picture-adjust sub-menu you’ll find brightness, contrast, sharpness, gamma, color temperature, and fine-tuning controls for the colors, and finally, the Input and General sub-menus provide you with general system settings. On the flip side, the LG has a slightly higher refresh rate, significantly faster response time, and it gets a lot brighter.
