After losing his family’s 170-year-old bourbon recipe in a fire, Bill Samuels and his wife Margie set out to revive the family heirloom, by making a bourbon just as special as the original recipe and thus, Maker’s Mark was born. The limestone shelf where the distillery is located is key to crafting the unique taste of Maker's Mark – the only distillery with its own water source and watershed. Maker's Mark is believed to be the only bourbon distillery to use pure, iron-free limestone spring water exclusively and not city, well or river water. Makers Mark maintain that they distil their bourbon to the lowest proof of any US whiskey distillery.
