About this deal

Sara, who is profoundly affected by the cold London winters, finds her dreary attic room transformed into a warm, plush haven filled with delicious food, much to her surprise. Some titles you will already know; some will be new to you, but there are stories for everyone to love, whatever your age. This entry was posted in Book reviews, Other Authors, Reading Recommendations and tagged A Little Princess, Eleanor H Porter, Frances Hodgson Burnett, If you like Blyton, Joan Aiken, Pollyanna, The Secret Garden, The Secret Island, The Wolves of Willoughby Chase. Sent to board at Miss Minchin's Select Seminary for Young Ladies, Sara is devastated when her adored father dies.

Bonnie (supposedly orphaned during the book) and cousin Sylvia (already an orphan) find that Bonnie’s house has been taken over by their distant relative who was supposed to be taking care of them. I was hooked and have read most of her work,so I recommend Frances Hodgson Burnett to you as an author for every age range, and plots that never disappoint if you, like me, enjoy a story where good always triumphs over adversity. With her kindness and generous spirit never waning, despite cruel treatment from the school’s headmistress, Miss Minchin, Sara discovers that even in the greatest hardships, one can still find love, joy, and magic. She continues to be kind and polite to everyone, even her abusers, in the belief that conduct, not money, make a true princess. Evil Orphanage Lady: Miss Minchin seems decent at first, but as soon as it is revealed that Sara is an orphan, she turns her into a scullery maid with hardly any pay and shuts her up into a tiny attic, separated from all the other girls except one servant. Our list includes Nina Bawden ( Carrie's War, The Peppermint Pig), Rumer Godden ( The Dark Horse, An Episode of Sparrows), Joan Aiken ( The Serial Garden, The Gift Giving) E.

Once she is rendered destitute, however, Miss Minchin wastes no time in segregating her away from the other children and feeding her scraps. I think I confused the plot of this with A Little Princess somewhat, as there are several attempts from the girls to escape and I kept half-expecting Sara to do the same, or for her father to not really be dead. Carmichael outright says she would have been better off in the streets than at Miss Minchin's school. However, a couple of years later, word comes that a bad investment has bankrupted her father, who subsequently died of Brain Fever brought on by the shock. When the King agrees to put her in charge of combing, she makes sure that everyone in the castle has beautifully combed hair, but she leaves her own until last.Suddenly penniless, Sara is banished to an attic room where she is starved, abused, and forced to work as a servant. This catalogue record does not identify the illustrator but links a page-by-page "electronic copy from HathiTrust" with unnumbered page 7, "List of Illustrations", subheading "From drawings by Reginald B. Sitting on the Roof: One of the only things Sara likes about her Fallen Princess circumstances is that her attic room has a skylight, and she can stand up through it to people-watch and see the sunset. It tells the story of Sara Crewe, a young girl who faces adversity with kindness and imagination, proving that true strength comes from within.
