About this deal

She spends her free time playing video and tabletop games, keeping bees, and looking through her telescope. I’ve used the word utopian a lot, but I guess the setting would more accurately be described as aspirational. Each chapter details their interactions with the different communities and the interactions are diverse as Mosscap is introduced to the populace. If you’ve read A Psalm for the Wild-Built, you’ll already know that Chambers uses the pronoun “they” for Dex, and this comes off as less intrusive and confusing in this book (part of a lot of readers’ complaints about the first novella was that they weren’t always sure if “they” was referring to just Dex or Dex and other people in scenes with two or more folks — or a robot).

This book is the type of reading experience I’d recommend to anyone having a hard time, which might be a lot of people at this point. What would it be like to have boundaries and to respect the boundaries of others, where it is expected?Becky Chambers is fantastic at expressing so precisely things I can talk about endlessly: like the transformative power of love and queer community, the beauty and strangeness of how we eke meaning out of our surroundings, and how joy and beauty can sometimes be so mundane that, in that simplicity, they become utterly radical. There is an almost melancholy air to Dex at times as they continue to question their life’s goals and purpose.

They hope to find the answers they seek, while making new friends, learning new concepts, and experiencing the entropic nature of the universe. However, the door is left open for another sequel, so perhaps this is all part of a proposed trilogy. Chambers’ writing is always tender and healing, but this book has something else braided into it — something more. It’s not like I ever doubted the Awakening happened, but meeting you made it real in a way no museum ever could.

Of course I don’t have to,” Mosscap scoffed, clearly finding Dex’s reluctance on this front ridiculous. Praise Allalae for the tube of anti-itch cream they were going to slather themself with once they’d dried off.One day last week Alexa caught me off guard with something like, "Thank you for always being so appreciative. While this book manages some strong, authentic moments, I’m still not convinced that Chambers can excel at the novella length, and the end result here was a middling read overall. As they mastered the art of brewing the perfect blend of tea whilst listening to the concerns of others, they still found a gaping hole in their life that they couldn’t fulfil.
