About this deal

Each chapter has a meal (or drink, lots of drinks) and Claire Powell's writing and characters are funny and heartbreaking and moreish . Set over the course of one year, “At The Table” tells the story of the Maguire family, parents Gerry and Linda and their adult children Nicole and Jamie.

Windows users should also consider upgrading to Internet Explorer 11, Microsoft Edge, or switching to Firefox or Chrome.Hardworking - and hard-drinking - Nicole pursues the ex she unceremoniously dumped six years ago, while people-pleasing Jamie fears he's sleepwalking into a marriage he doesn't actually want. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because of the occasionally dodgy English ("was sat", "slithers of prawn toast", some clunky writing in places) which was a bit annoying, but apart from that, it's a brilliant first novel. We start with a meal where the parents reveal they’re getting divorced and we end with a meal shared with mother and daughter who are, due to the events they’ve been through, forging a new relationship. To Nicole and Jamie Maguire, their parents seem the ideal couple - a suburban double act, happily married for more than thirty years.

this was easy enough to read and has some excellent isolated scenes (particularly love the blow job in the office! It's full of dry humour and wit, as well as astute psychological observations of what it is to be human. Piglet is the searing, unforgettable and original debut which is set to take readers by storm in 2024. Over a family lunch, Linda and Gerry Maguire announce to their two adult kids Nicole and Jamie, that they’re separating after almost thirty years of marriage. The simple details of everyday life are just spot on every time and you could feel the ups and downs and anxieties of each character. An unsentimental exploration of love and disillusionment, At the Table is about what it means to grow up - both as an individual, and as a family. The storyline is well-crafted, the characters engaging and the level of detail brings every scene to life. Hardworking – and hard-drinking – Nicole pursues the ex she unceremoniously dumped six years ago, while people-pleasing Jamie fears he’s sleepwalking into a marriage he doesn’t actually want. The characters and their motivations were so criminally underdeveloped, I still don’t know why anyone did anything or what I was supposed to feel when they did it. The only character that I had a smidgen of sympathy for was Jamie, but even that wasn't enough to make the story enjoyable.

I was expecting an easy read with funny parts here and there and instead it was like having an inside look into someone’s home. We also use them to help detect unauthorized access or activity that violate our terms of service, as well as to analyze site traffic and performance for our own site improvement efforts. Also the descriptions of the ingredients in the meals didn’t always add anything- just tedious padding. Their lives have been marked by meals, and this focuses on a year in their lives at different moments. As the hours count down to their wedding, Piglet is torn between a growing appetite and the desire to follow the recipe, follow the rules.

Though major life events take place, this novel focuses primarily on the little moments that make up the mosaic of our lives. The quantum physicist and BBC presenter invites readers to adopt a scientific approach to modern living. There was a half-hearted attempt to tie this saccharine story in a bow, but it ultimately fell so flat that I felt cheated.
