About this deal

Over the years I would discover the original theatrical cut - which isn't bad, just not my preferred version because I never felt the narration to be organic or necessary to the film. In a signature role as 21st-century detective Rick Deckard, Harrison Ford brings his masculine-yetvulnerable presence to this stylish noir thriller. Covering more than just 'Blade Runner,' the recurring themes in all of Dick's novels are touched upon, as well as his continued relevance to the genre today.

Vangelis' amazing score is crystal clear as well and this TrueHD presentation reveals even more layers of synthesized bass and atmosphere in this revolutionary soundtrack. This phenomenal Blade Runner set from Warner on Blu-ray sets the new standard for comprehensive special editions. Of course, this version of the film was taken from weak elements, so the often fuzzy picture, weak blacks and pale colors are to be expected. For classic films on 4K, this is the new demo disc to flash at your pals who don't see the point in upgrading. The intensity really is just staggering at times, especially with the shots of the external city streets. An example of the lack of clarity in the source material happens early on, just before Holden VKs Leon. For the week of September 4th, Warner Home Entertainment is bringing a welcome 4K upgrade of Ridley Scott's landmark sci-fi thriller Blade Runner. The film has always been well ahead of its time in sound design, but the Blu-ray production team has really gone above and beyond. The film’s ambience comes across as well, with spinners flying in all directions, explosions going off every which where.

This would have been the perfect opportunity for some sort of behind the scenes retrospective with cast and crew interviews or even one of the new film's many trailers. Things take a turn when Deckard discovers a fifth replicant, Sean Young’s Rachel, and develops feelings for her.Updated daily and in real-time, we track all high-def disc news and release dates, and review the latest disc titles. From the first bursts of flames along the skyline to the flying spinners to the booming base tones of Vangelis' iconic score - it's an audio mix that joyfully pins you to the back of your seat. Roy (Rutger Hauer), the film's chief antagonist and leader of the wayward Replicants, gives an incredibly moving speech towards the end of the film that is about as close to Shakespearian as one will ever find in a science fiction film. Many, many scenes that have been discussed for years are finally revealed, including Deckard's visit to Holden in the hospital, expanded material with Blatty and Tyrell, a completely different opening, and even a first-ever glimpse's of Deckard's wife!

The 4K disc carries no less than three separate audio commentary tracks: one by Ridley Scott, one by crew members Syd Mead, Lawrence G. In a future of high-tech possibility soured by urban and social decay, Deckard hunts for fugitive, murderous replicates - and is drawn to a mystery woman whose secrets may undermine his soul. I love it even more on Blu-ray, although it has to be said that you won’t see the magic transformation in HD that you see in more modern features. The complex optical composites of the film have also been given a major scrubbing and none of the matte lines and optical cut outs that were so prevalent in previous versions are present here.Blade Runner on this Blu-ray is hardly the same, but it’s just that much better than the DVD to make double-dipping essential, not just optional. Setting a new standard for Blu-ray releases and supplemental material, Blade Runner seems to have just about every conceivable extra imaginable in this set. I sampled each to get the general flavor, and was impressed by how specific each track gets, as well as the lack of overlap with the mammoth documentary (see disc two below).

Even some of the older optical shots of models look surprisingly more realistic on this new transfer. Blade Runner The Final Cut arrives for the first time on 4K Ultra HD courtesy of Warner Brothers in a four-disc + Digital HD set.Even better, the sequences with the removed narration have been tightened up (they never played properly without the voice-over), and the effects have been cleaned up considerably (including print imperfections and on-set gaffes, such as visible wires on the spinner vehicles). People looking for ‘3D pop’, for hyper-real clarity, for a full-on surround impact are going to be disappointed, but then again, if you’re expecting a 30 year old film. It was set in this dark and ominous vision of a near future where humanity has all but abandoned the planet that spawned the species.
