Most versions of the album feature four bonus tracks, including three remixes of ""Fu-Gee-La"", and a short acoustic Wyclef Jean solo track entitled ""Mista Mista"". An open yet funky collage of hip-hop, soul, blues, jazz, and reggae, the Fugees' second album, The Score, is a great step forward for the New York trio.

Contains a replayed sample from " Ooh La La La" (McGrier/Marie), McNella Music/Midnight Magnet Music. The instrumentation is as it should be for rock fans, a fairly obvious Bob Marley cover for stoners and college kids, and enough soulful vocals from figurehead Lauryn Hill to middle-aged listeners still on the fence about hip-hop. Some of these albums were poppy, some were gangsta, and some were given the slightly condescending label of "socially conscious. It not only catapulted the Fugees into stardom, but also launched the productive solo careers of Wyclef Jean and Lauryn Hill, the latter of whom already ranks as one of the top female MCs of all time based on her work here. First single, ‘Fu-Gee-La’ is based on Teena Marie’s ‘Ooo La La La’ and ‘(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right’ by Ramsey Lewis, the two songs reinterpreted and inconspicuously and masterfully brought together. The album features a wide range of samples and instrumentation, with many aspects of alternative hip hop that would come to dominate the hip hop music scene in the mid-late 1990s. The Score's production was handled mostly by the Fugees themselves and Jerry Duplessis, with additional production from Salaam Remi, John Forté, Diamond D, and Shawn King. Not just a collection of individual talents, the Fugees' three MCs all share a crackling chemistry and a wide-ranging taste in music. They are often considered to be one of the definitive alternative hip hop acts, being one of the first alternative hip hop acts to break into the mainstream.In addition to receiving mostly favourable reviews upon its release, the album has garnered a considerable amount of acclaim over the years, with many music critics and publications noting it as one of the greatest albums of the 1990s, as well as one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time.
