About this deal

Most of the world doesn’t have to think twice when asked where they’re from or where home is; some children have to think harder about the answer. A powerful and beautifully illustrated story about migration and the meaning of home, from the award-winning team behind The Promise. The child becomes attached to a pigeon in which they seem to journey together to finally feel at home together. Nicola Davies’s beautiful story — an immigrant’s tale with powerful resonance in our troubled times — is illustrated by an artist who makes the world anew with every picture.

The pigeons however are in full colour from the beginning to show how the boy feels comforted and more like himself when he is around them. Together they pin their hopes on a race across Europe and the special bird they believe can win it: King of the Sky. I don't mind the message in this book at all, I think it's very relevant to our times and as the daughter of immigrants I feel it needs to be told. Biography: Nicola Davies is an award-winning author whose many books for children include A First Book of Nature, Ice Bear, Big Blue Whale, Dolphin Baby, Bat Loves the Night and the Silver Street Farm series. When she is not off on scientific expeditions, Nicola Davies lives in a cottage in Somerset, England, where she is lucky enough to have pipistrelle bats nesting in her roof.

works well as both a stand-alone story and a starting point for discussing important political issues of migration. Nicola Davies is an award-winning author whose many books for children include Ice Bear, Big Blue Whale and King of the Sky. Our donations to The Rainbow Centre have helped provide an education and a safe haven to hundreds of children who live in appalling conditions. Endorsed by Amnesty International King of the Sky is a poignant tale of loss and hope, from Nicola Davies and Laura Carlin. A gorgeously illustrated picture book for older readers, King of the Sky is a story about immigration, friendship, and the meaning of home. This will work for group readings, but will be much more special for one-on-one sharing, where readers can absorb the language and pore over the detailed, nuanced pictures. She is as softly spoken as Mr Evans, her pictures beautifully evoking the smoky, mining community setting. The little boy (who despite being the narrator is never actually named) eventually feels like he is at home in Wales. Starting a new life in a new country, a young boy feels lost and alone - until he meets an old man who keeps racing pigeons. Nicola Davies is an award-winning author whose many books for children include A First Book of Nature, Ice Bear, Big Blue Whale, Dolphin Baby, Bat Loves the Night and the Silver Street Farm series.
