About this deal

If you’re looking for a simple way to backup and stream your media whilst on the go, this WD My Passport Wireless SSD Review is for you. I inserted the card and straightaway the drive got to work, completing the task one minute and three seconds later. If you’re someone who travels, or simply wants the smallest, lightest and fastest in-field backup solution available today, this is the product for you. If you choose to view by photos, they’re presented as thumbnails alone with three in a row, allowing you to scroll through them faster. Once the SD card backup starts, you will be able to monitor the copy process by checking out the progress bar in the WD My Cloud app.

Unfortunately, the results were very disappointing – it took a total of 34 minutes and 12 seconds to back up the same data, something it was able to do at less than half the time with the built-in SD card reader. We’ve partnered with Ontrack to provide protection for routine and extreme data loss scenarios such as drive failure, viruses, and software issues. These portable solutions have to have power banks inside, because they are designed to be used without a laptop or a computer in the field, so that you can autonomously transfer / backup files. Being able to stream your media is an additional bonus – you’ll have to decide how relevant it is to you. What’s nice about the My Passport-series devices, is that you can preview RAW files from many different cameras when using the WD My Cloud app. On the positive side, the transfer process was still faster and the battery discharge was still far more efficient compared to what I had previously seen on the Gnarbox. Above: With its rubber bumper sleeve fitted, the My Passport Wireless SSD measures 135x135x30mm and weighs just under half a kilo, making it substantially larger than a basic portable drive whether using an SSD or an traditional hard disk. Above: One on side of the drive you’ll find a spring-loaded SD slot which like those in camera bodies will swallow a card whole without any portion sticking out; push it in and it’ll spring out sufficiently for you to grab it.

Inserting and removing SD cards is a pretty straightforward process (it works just like doing it on a camera), but there are a few things one should keep in mind. All content, design, and layout are Copyright © 1998–2024 Digital Photography Review All Rights Reserved. Again the backup process began as soon as I inserted the card, and this time completed 15 minutes and 23 seconds later. I’ve found that it will charge an iPad mini or one of the batteries from my Fuji X-T2, which just adds to it’s usefulness in the field.I'd considered Gnarbox but the company was in trouble earlier in the year and it's not clear where they stand now. If you choose to view all files, then each occupies a separate line with a small thumbnail on the left and the name to its side. Conversely the drive can be used as a wireless NAS, providing shared and collaborative storage for multiple users.

Second, I found the process of copying data from a cloud provider to be painfully slow, something I could easily avoid by just plugging it directly into my computer. It is a very clean, user-friendly interface through which you can access WiFi settings and Admin, Hardware, Media, Support and Firmware sections. Cost range will vary depending upon Service Level, type of device, cause of data loss, drive condition, and other factors.

To reach the benchmark numbers provided below, you will need to plug the included USB cable into the device (with the micro USB 3. Since I have no plans on streaming content from mine and I only want to use it to backup my memory cards in the field, I skipped through this process. If you need to go through large folders of images and possibly make selections of the best ones while on the road, you’ll definitely want to use a tablet instead like an iPad.

I’ve never really liked travelling with a laptop if I can avoid it as I just prefer not having to carry one with me or leave it in the hotel room or refuge, and I rarely want to do significant editing while I’m on the road. and WD claim up to 65MB/s, and I found when I copied 100GB of data from a 128GB card and it too around 30 minutes. If you find yourself wanting to sync up your data to the cloud via Dropbox or some other service, your best bet would be to connect the drive directly to your computer, then configure your desktop client to sync with the folders on the device. The software is able to read thumbnails from RAW files (using the embedded JPEG thumbnails in RAW files), so you can preview images from both SD cards and the built-in storage. But if you can see yourself exploiting the standalone capabilities of the My Passport Wireless SSD for backing-up SD cards in the field and wirelessly sharing its contents, then it’s a product I can recommend. The Android app worked fairly well in my tests, although was limited by the smaller screen of my phone. While I was pretty unhappy about how slow Gnarbox backs up images from SD cards, I wondered how WD My Passport Wireless SSD would do in comparison.
