About this deal

The ART DJ PRE II (formerly named the 'Phono MicroPRE') acts as an interface between your turntable and your audio recording / playback system. Either way I still have it in my current setup, and even though a better one can impact the sound quality, I find this one perfect enough, as there are other components (like the speakers and the needle) that have a much greater impact in the final result. The front gain trim control and signal/clip LED allow you to optimize the preamp’s gain for a wide range of input sources.

On the front of the device, there’s a centrally located gain knob (up to +10 dB), with a convenient clip indicator, as well as the low-cut switch and input cap button. The ART DJ PRE II is an interface between turntable and audio recording/playback device, perfect for recording vinyl to your computer or adding EQ to your tuntable.

As you see, the DJPRE II has "low cut" filter switch together with input capacitance selector (100 or 200 pf). I could not get circuit diagrams for the Creek for some reason, but from my vague recollections the circuit design was very similar to the 1616m, and also the Lehmann Black Cube phono stage (and others). In this way, the signal of a turntable can also be fed to the AUX inputs of mixing consoles, sound cards, or tape decks. The Onkyo 809 is being used as a preamp, sending its output to a Monarchy Audio SM-70 Pro, feeding a nice pair of Genesis Physics II's that I totally rebuilt the crossovers in.

Of course, system synergy plays a big role in these things, and the Pluto just didn't sound very good with my system at the time. We are breaking new ground here with our first test of phono pre-amps so expect future measurements to vary based on feedback to this thread. I found with my Mani that the lowest gain of 30dB coupled with high gain on my Magni 3 headphone amp and higher volume sounds better than gaining up the phono stage. Their product range includes digital interfaces and mixers, rack mixers, amplifiers, and monitor speakers, as well as headphone amplifiers, power conditioners, patch bays, and also “intelligent” graphic equalisers, tube preamps, compressors, and of course microphones. Because of this, each time that I wanted to play a record I would have to go over and manually turn UP the volume.

Housed in an all aluminium black anodised case, the DJ PRE II can be powered by a wide variety of external supplies. The DeeJayPRE is a phono preamp with built-in RIAA equalisation and is simply put between turntables and line input.

The gain can be controlled on the front and includes a clipping LED that lets you know when your signal is too high.

To ensure that this can be done without damage, the body is made entirely of aluminium, which allows it to be robust without weighing too much. Its length of barely more than 10 cm and depth of less than 9 cm also takes up very little space, so it can feel at home in accessory bags and the like when travelling.
