About this deal

She works for this total asshat named Kaden, who uses her love and bond with her sister to control her. It's been too long since I've read a good fantasy book, a story that actually makes sense and with a strongly opinionated, morally gray protagonist whose world doesn't revolve around her complicated love life (love triangles). We get to see his beautiful healing journey and the coconut🥥 character (hard on the outside, soft on the inside). Some paragraphs repeat within pages of each other, word for word like she just copied and pasted them.

For me, the book had a bit of a slow start because you couldn't place what and where 'what' was happening, but it was honestly QUITE QUITE good as we went deeper into the story. She wasn't original in any specific way, but I will never get tired of female main characters like her. And for Samkiel's character, to be honest, I wish he was more scary and intense as described, especially since he has the nickname The World Ender (and yes, I still don't understand him changing his name to Liam; it's so unserious). And even though we didn't get a lot of spice in this book, their interactions are full of angst and tension.

initially, it was a little slow when the author was building up the world and the writing did feel clunky at the start, so maybe it would’ve been better if there was an editor. I understand she’s trying to build a relationship with the sister to show us how much she means to Dianna, but she tells us about 85 times in the span of three chapters that she never gets to see Gabby, and this is such a rare occurrence. I still have questions and theories about her powers, but I’m excited to see what happens to Dianna in book 2, as the ending of this book will have some SERIOUS implications for her character development. Everything she’s done since then has been to keep her sister alive and to keep her master, Kaden, happy.

TL;DR – A fantastic fantasy fiction with a unique world of Gods and Monsters, swoon-worthy and lovable characters, a profound relationship development, and action-packed with an unpredictable plotline and an unexpected cliffhanger. The world is so complex but I found it very easy to understand and I didn't find myself confused like I have when I start other fantasy books.I enjoyed this world and the lore behind it a lot, it was different from the normal demon books you see. Also, (and may this be an admonition for all authors -but I'm looking at you in particular, SJM) please, for the love of our petty lord and reluctant savior cardan greenbriar, stop describing every single piece of clothing characters wear. Please go read this book if you’re a fan of enemies to friends to lovers, forbidden love, epic plots, and rich world building. I enjoyed this one so much I will definitely read the sequel especially after the exciting cliffhanger ending we were left with!

But as Dianna continues to commit atrocities in his name to find this book, she begins to hear rumors that a god still exists and may even have reawakened to stop Kaden. The Book of Azrael ended with an absolute bang and I don't know how I'm supposed to wait until book two. I also appreciated that these two were proper enemies as a lot of books that claim this, that just isn’t the case, they are frenemies at best, these two were the real deal and initially hated each other's guts.I did think that the enemies to lovers was done well and felt realistic without being too rushed or forced. If it underwent some much-needed in-depth editing, I would be more than happy to reread it and alter my rating.
