The second half of the book (particularly the last few chapters), is more of a history of Paris during the First and Second World Wars. From the seventeenth century, the state-run Academy of Fine Arts and its official exhibition, the Salon, led the direction of French art.The threading of historical facts into his tale was skillfully done and added considerable interest for me.
