About this deal

Gradually—and I have no idea how it happened, so I can only credit Allende for some kind of magic—it all coalesced and began to make sense. But I had a tweet from a reader asking about my allusion to Isabel Allende in my review of ‘Daughter of Smoke and Bone’ and requesting some Allende recommendations.

Allende's works often explore themes of love, family, and social justice, and her richly imagined characters and vivid prose have earned her a dedicated global following. After predicting the death of her sister Rosa, Clare remains silent for 9 years, only speaking again to announce her marriage to Esteban Trueba. In 1993, the book was adapted into a film ( The House of the Spirits) by Danish director Bille August. As a self-made man who earned all of his wealth from years of work spent improving Tres Marías, Esteban scorns communists and believes them to be lazy and stupid.

Daunted by all the names and the massive paragraphs, I was unsure if I would ever get comfortable in this story.

Spanning four generations, Isabel Allende's magnificent family saga is populated by a memorable, often eccentric cast of characters. I found this portrayal of all the different sides of Esteban Trueba extremely effective at gaining my sympathy. Although the film won several awards in Europe, including Best Film at the Lola Awards from the German Film Academy and the Robert Award from the Danish Film Academy, in America it was regarded as a critical and commercial failure. After their wedding, Esteban's sister Férula comes to live with the newlyweds in the big house on the corner.Upon arriving at Tres Marías for the first time, Blanca immediately befriends a young boy named Pedro Tercero, who is the son of her father's foreman.

Alba (Spanish for "Dawn," Latin for "white") is the daughter of Blanca and Pedro Tercero García, although for many years of her life she was led to believe that Count de Satigny was her father. Some of the characters' names are significant, particularly the women's names, which often indicate the personalities of the characters. In parallel, the story of Esteban Trueba begins, the central male character, whose brutality and cruelty are brought into sharp focus through his treatment of his land tenants. But in the last few pages it earn my stars and all the other stars it's accumulated since it's publication. She appeals to Esteban to use his political influence to help find asylum for Pedro outside Chile so the three of them can be a family. The story of this family echoes the change in ideologies and turbulence that shaped Latin America, but tragedy is never far away and this is where the story comes to a climax and ends. Two oft-cited reasons were its diffusely episodic structure and its cast of mostly Anglo-American actors in Latin American roles.
