I admit I was disappointed to see how small the book and bear were when they arrived (book approx 17x17cm, bear about 15cm tall) but my son was happy enough with both, and is always a favourite story for bedtime. Catchy text, beguiling illustrations and a gooey heart-warming ending finished with a generous helping of how-to-hug-time.

One thing I particularly love about David Melling’s illustrations is that he portrays emotion so well in both the facial expressions and body language of his characters. Nothing incredible in the story telling, but the pictures are quite amusing and adorable and I think I would have enjoyed them as a kid especially. It's short, uncomplicated story is a quick bedtime read and the hilarious attempts at finding a hug crack my daughter up every time. Sensitive and insightful, this poignant story provides an ideal starting point for discussion about how it feels when things go wrong. Before becoming an internationally acclaimed author-illustrator, David worked as an animation artist for films including the much-loved Father Christmas by Raymond Briggs.I suppose it’s a slightly sappy story but I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I’m sure I’d have loved it as a kid and after all young kids are its target audience. He worked as a cel renderer and background artist in several animation studios before he began illustrating children’s books. Fancy Dress Farmyard is great for preschoolers because it’s a game of peekaboo and the illustrations are bright, bold and funny. Another of Jez’s books that is perfect for this age group is The Gobble, Gobble, Moooo Tractor Book, because the children get to make lots of animal noises while you read the book. With his signature red scarf to his bumble bee pyjamas, Hugless Douglas is a cuddly, loveable character that deserves a place next to the Gruffalo, Spot, and the Very Hungry Caterpillar.

He loved it so much that he has asked Santa for it (and Santa happily obliged) it is now a must read at bedtime and it at least means he goes to sleep with a smile on his face. David Melling is one of my favourite picture book author/illustrators and I absolutely love Hugless Douglas.The rhythm and rhyme is perfect so it flows really well as you read it and children love the illustrations, especially the animals driving cars. p>Read about how we'll protect and use your data in our Privacy Notice. It’s quite amusing for the reader to follow Douglas looking for a hug and hugging some less than huggable things and being, including those who don’t want a hug.
