About this deal

This seemed fine to me, as the door that opened, the left-hand one, provided enough room for people to walk though or carry chairs out. The awards have been born out of an idea from well-known author and prolific journalist, Hunter Davies, who has a home on the Island. I did my flash backstroke, a few yards of my stylish crawl, then my sedate breaststroke, wondering how many other people on the beach were admiring my amazing bathing feats and thinking to themselves, Goodness, he is a jolly good swimmer for his age. I am proud of that, but I did rather get spoiled and was allowed a lot of selfish and unthinking behaviour.

Every time we walk a new beach, which looks empty, we always find a new beach cafe, often just a shack, with old wooden tables and chairs – but but so artistic. My heart flutters every time I come back from the beach to my cottage, through the front gate, down the tiled path and into the sweet little pink-washed cottage with its lovely Regency bow window. There will be 1 book that will be acclaimed as ‘The Isle of Wight Book of the Year’, agreed upon by all the judges. Hunter believes the Island will only be the second place in the UK (after the Lake District) to hold an area book awards and he has lined up two well-known authors, Joanna Trollope and Cowes's own Alan Titchmarsh, to join him on the judging panel. Like the late Sunday Times Editor Harry Evans before him – both natural-born hacks with insatiable curiosity – he edited the student newspaper, Palatinate. It is one thing to have an exciting new project but, in old age, will I be able to sort and solve unforeseen problems without despairing, becoming depressed and regretting the whole thing? King Charles I was imprisoned here; Queen Victoria so liked its mild climate and coastal scenery that she built an Italianate house here (and later expired in it); hundreds of thousands of people got stoned here at music festivals in the 1960s summers of love. Claire – like my wife before her – thinks I am potty, not just tight, pointlessly saving a few pennies. How Meghan Markle's style has changed from boho island girl to Hollywood glam since her first wedding in.

We stepped into the hallway into bright sunlight, which was streaming down from the glass door at the end that led into the back courtyard. Since September 2020 we had been trying to walk the whole coast, but at the rate we go it will probably take us ten years, if we live that long.People said Ryde was a bit run down, not posh or full of well-off people like Seaview, Bembridge,Yarmouth and Cowes – which is partly true I suppose. I guess if you don't know the place very well it is quite an entertaining read, but when you do it is quite factually cringeworthy in places. It will turn the courtyard into another room,' she explained, 'and while I am in the kitchen cooking or getting drinks, I will be able hear all the chat outside, which I can't at the moment. So two years ago, we decided to find a country cottage together, a love nest just for us where we could spend the rest of our lives.

Claire was a bit surprised, never having known any of her previous boyfriends take to their bed every afternoon – on their own. Claire often repeats what her mother often repeated to her, that there are two main reasons couples have rows — money and sex. Hunter Davies, journalist, author and broadcaster, who has just published his latest book ‘Love in Old Age’ looked across over his cappuccino with a twinkle in his eye and said: “I am auditioning.By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. He and his partner bought a house in Ryde a year ago, and as well as enjoying discovering the Island, he has also been putting his journalistic nose to work, interviewing locals for an upcoming book about Ryde, due to be published next year.

By then they were pissed off with being The Beatles, they were still making records but had stopped performing in public and had enough of being the most famous people on the planet. That’s where he came up with ‘A Life in the Day’, starting with a typical Boat Club hearty, whose routine involved pub crawls and being sick.
